Should Texas Eliminate Vehicle Safety Inspections?

State Representative Ron Simmons (R - Carrollton) and State Senator Don Huffines (R - Dallas) have both introduced bills, HB 3995 and SB 1588 respectively, that would eliminate the requirement for an annual state vehicle inspection.

Carvana IPO Seen as 'Exciting' for Used Car Industry

Kelley Blue Book senior analyst Alec Gutierrez shared an enthusiastic yet cautious assessment of the $100 million initial public offering launched by Carvana, the online used-vehicle retailer that said in its filing paperwork that it has sold and delivered approximately 27,500 vehicles to customers through its website during a three-year span from its inception through the close of 2016.

Used-Car Values Decline Faster Than Expected at Ally, CFO Says

Ally Financial Inc. experienced a faster decline in used-vehicle prices in the first quarter than it originally anticipated, said Chris Halmy, the company's chief financial officer, during a financial outlook call last week. However, the company plans to stay the course and see what happens in the second quarter, as tax refunds come in, he added.  The company projected a 5% decline in used-vehicle prices, but actually experienced a 7% drop - each percentage drop represents about $50 million on an annualized basis.

15 State AGs Also Question CFPB's Structure

First, the development surfaced that the Department of Justice filed an amicus brief - a legal document filed in appellate court cases by non-litigants with a strong interest in the subject matter - questioning the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau being overseen by a single director.  Turns out, that stance was concurred by a collection of 15 state attorneys general, led by Kansas attorney general Derek Schmidt. These attorneys general argue that there are "unprecedented efforts" to insulate the CFPB director's decisions from review result in "essentially unchecked administrative powers", which is at odds with the Constitution's command that all executive power be vested in the president.

Ford Exec Expects Consumers to Get Fully Autonomous Cars by 2026-31

Ford Motor Co.'s head of research believes the general public won't be able to buy a fully autonomous vehicle until sometime between 2026 and 2031.  The automaker is developing a Level 4 self-driving vehicle -- without a steering wheel or gas and brake pedals -- for use in a ride-sharing service in 2021. Ken Washington, Ford's vice president of research and advanced engineering, said sales to individual consumers likely won't happen until five to 10 years after that first fleet implementation.

VW Cleared by EPA to Sell Repaired 2015 Diesels

Volkswagen AG will soon do what's been impossible since its emissions crisis began: sell diesel-powered cars in the U.S. The company received approval from the EPA for dealers to sell 2015 model year diesels after updating the vehicles' emissions software, VW Group of America spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said.  The software update is part of a required emissions repair approved by the EPA and California Air Resources Board. The repair will also include changes to diesel engine hardware, but dealers do not have to wait until the repair parts become available early next year, Ginivan said.

Ford Recalls 53,000 Trucks Due to Risk They Could Roll Away While in Park

Ford is recalling nearly 53,000 of its F-250 series pickup trucks due to the risk that they could roll away while in park due to a manufacturing error.  The recall affects the 2017 Ford F-250 built at the Kentucky Assembly Plant between Oct. 9, 2015 and March 30, 2017. The truck comes with a gasoline 6.2-liter engine.
