A young Jewish man flees Nazi persecution during WWII. Traveling through the mountains of the Black Forest and unable to cross the heavily patrolled Swiss border, he is given shelter by a farmer and his wife. Working together on the farm, the farmer confesses to the young man that the he and his wife have been unable to conceive a child, leading to an unusual arrangement which tests their relationship.
