Board members R. Jeffrey Hedges, CDME, Diana Klunk, CMF and David D. Regier, ATC, MS at BOC’s October Open House
How can you make a lasting impact in the O&P community? Just ask David Regier, ATC, MS, Public Member (a Board member who represents the consumers of services provided by a defined certificant population) of the Board for the Board of Certification/ Accreditation (BOC). He is the Director of Rehabilitation at Fort Worth Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas, and has been certified as an Athletic Trainer since 1979. He is also a former Board member for the National Athletic Trainers Association.
Regier is a life-long advocate of the O&P profession. An amputee who received his first prosthesis at the age of 11 years, he fondly remembers his first prosthetist as a genuine, loving individual who helped him walk, run and play kickball and baseball. He sees that same authentic passion today in the members of BOC’s Board of Directors, who he calls “truly engaged in promoting the profession and ensuring the highest level of O&P care standards are met through certification and accreditation.”
His message to recipients of O&P care is “Always attempt to do anything you want to try – ALL of us can perform different activities at various levels.” And for O&P professionals, he says, “Know you’re helping individuals achieve more, and everyone you touch will be changed in some form.”

First Swim - Shriners in Greenville
A First Swim Clinic was held recently at the Kroc Aquatic Center in Greenville, SC. The event, sponsored by Shriners Hospital for Children Greenville , along with Sprinkle Prosthetics and Surestep , brought together children and adults with physical or mobility challenges and provided them with safe, secure and fun instruction at the pool. Instruction was provided by two time World Champion Triathlete, Mabio Costa, a below the knee amputee.

Mabio was assisted by volunteers from Shriners Hospital and the local Greenville Splash, a US Masters swim group.

With 18 participants, 22 volunteers swim buddies, plus parents and support personnel, a full afternoon of adaptive swimming was met with smiles and cheers. We were visited by local Fox affiliate and the Greenville News for media coverage and our hope is that our sponsors will make this an annual event in Greenville!
First Climb - Shriners in Philadelphia
ABC6 Philadelphia
It was an amazing Saturday for some youngsters today in Maple Shade, New Jersey as they accomplished something that many people thought they never would.

The youngsters were either born without a limb, or had an amputation at some point.

As you can see, they were letting nothing slow them down, as they rock climbed for the first time.

These kids are all patients at Shriner's Hospitals for Children.
