Shriners Hospital
Is Doing A Great Job Helping Sick Children

Hannah, who was 1 1/2 years of age, had two broken bones when she arrived at the ER.

This was unusual and the nurses were alarmed. They alerted the child abuse team and Children's Aid.

But the broken bones were not the result of abuse. Hannah's bones had fractured spontaneously during play.

It was suspected that Hannah had a rare condition called fragile bone syndrome or osteogenesis imperfecta (OI).

Genetic testing was going to be done in New Orleans at Tulane University but was delayed for 6 months because the lab was flooded by Hurricane Katrina.

When the testing was eventually completed, it proved that Hannah had osteogenesis imperfecta.

With this syndrome, bones will fracture spontaneously with even mild trauma involved during normal childhood play.

At that time, Hannah's mother asked the team at Rupert Case Management to help.

We did the research and found that the Shriners Hospital in Montreal had developed a centre of excellence in the treatment of OI.

We arranged for Hannah to be seen there.

The Shriners Hospital arranged for a driver to come to Toronto to pick up Hannah and her mother.

Hannah's diagnosis was confirmed and she received comprehensive treatment at the Shriners.

Hannah is now 14 years old.

During the last 12 years Shriners has been incredibly generous. They have paid for the trips to Montreal, the hotel stays, the medical care and the medications used to treat OI.

I bumped into Hannah the other day. She was busy painting her nails.

She is a very bright and energetic young lady. She is healthy. No fractures. She might plan on going to medical school some day.

The Shriners and the team at the Shriners Hospital saved her life.
