Sustainability Fair Vendors, Workshops & Exhibits

As you may already know, Thursday, June 20th is the day for our 4th Annual Sustainability Fair. This has been a great event for us to be able to demonstrate and explain our ongoing development of the sustainable elements of our service. We have partnered with many of our suppliers as well as the local municipal and non-profit organizations that support our efforts. In addition to a traditional trade fair with these partners, we also will be showing off and explaining all of the sustainable experimenting we are doing at our office. View a Rain Garden, Bio-Swale, Eco-Lawn, Lawn Alternatives, Drought Tolerant Plantings, Recycling Programs, Low Emission Equipment, Organic Fertilization, etc. We do not believe you will find a more comprehensive display of sustainable landscaping anywhere else.

What a change in weather we had mid May.  The end of April and early May we had mid-summer like weather and we had to scramble to get enough water down to keep most landscapes irrigated.  That changed mid month and we had record rain the end of the month.  We knew it wouldn't last so there wasn't a huge surprise but the drastic change again had us hopping, turning irrigation systems off once the rain came.

What's next?  The forecast is to have temperatures return to the 80's this week so the irrigation is back on.  For good?  Probably not.  Remember, summer officially does not start in Oregon till July 5th.

May Weather Perfect Justification for Weather Based Irrigation

Spring is always the most difficult time of the year to properly set irrigation. The weather is highly variable and the weather forecast is not that accurate. We are either caught guessing wrong, either over or under watering. This is why we strongly recommend Weather Based Irrigation systems. They are designed to receive accurate weather data automatically daily and then water appropriately with no guess work. As can be seen in the graph above, minimal irrigation was needed until April 20th. The following two weeks were warm and dry more like a normal August.   Summer irrigation schedules was needed on most properties. Following that, a week of rain resulted in no irrigation needed. Are we headed back into a dry stretch. Who can know for sure?

The great news is that installing a Weather Based Irrigation system results on an average savings of 20-40% of typical water use and the cost to convert most properties has less than two years ROI. This technology is ever improving and will be a huge part of our Sustainability Fair where we will be showing off the latest and greatest. Again, if you have not considered our proposed changed to a Weather-Based Irrigation system, come to the fair and evaluate it. You can save big money!

Summer Flower Planting Complete Next Week

May is always bittersweet. Just as the pansies are in peak color, we begin to remove them to plant the summer flowers. This year was a great example of why as the hot weather mid month, started taking it's toll on the pansies. Pansies do not withstand normal summer heat and are best in the cool season.

The good news is that we have just completed our summer planting and are excited with the new combinations being displayed this year. Now, this change out did not go off without a few bugs as the hot weather burned a few plantings and the following heavy rain and hail related to the thunderstorms are impacting some plantings. Most withstood the wild weather and those that didn't were evaluated and replanted where needed. We are excited for this summer and hope you are pleased with your display if you have flowers. It is one of our specialties and we love to push the envelope but also are careful to not take unwise risks.

Turf Core Aeration Improves Irrigation Efficiency

We are now in the process of aerating lawns for those customers who have approved this valuable service. Why do we recommend aeration? It is the most cost effective way to relieve the problems of compaction and thatch development. Aeration pokes holes through the thatch and soil surface which helps water get into the root zone instead of running off. We recommend it for June as the biggest advantage is to improve irrigation penetration which reduces the amount of irrigation water that runs off. The effect of aeration do not last more than 4-5 months so doing it right at the beginning of the irrigation season is best.

We see other contractors dethatching at this time of year and have wondered why. Although dethatching is a common practice on sports fields and golf courses, it is only effective if done regularly and several times each year. In addition, it has a significant effect on the appearance of the lawn in the short run which we do not think is worth it. Dethatching is too expensive and causes too much visual impact to warrant our recommendation.

Pacific Named One of Oregon's Greenest Companies 5th Year in a Row

At the Oregon Business Magazine annual Best Green Companies luncheon yesterday, Corey Peterson received Pacific Landscape Management's award as Oregon's 13th Greenest Companies.  This is our 5th year on the list and an award that we are quite proud of with our focus on helping our customers improve the sustainability of their landscapes through our service as well as our internal effort to be as "green" as possible in all of our business operations.  We are proud to have done this in some of the challenging economic times.  Sustainability is a balance of environmental protection, social acceptance and economic feasibility.  Our goal is to continue to challenge ourselves to reduce our environmental impact while maintaining beautiful landscapes at the lowest possible cost.  We believe all three objectives are achievable together.
