Navigation Center

1950 Mission Street, San Francisco

"Sunday Suppers" Project

The Navigation Center is a pilot project funded with an anonymous donation through the San Francisco Interfaith Council . It is a true collaboration between  Episcopal Community Services as the lead agency, Mission Neighborhood Resource Center and  the Mayor's Office of HOPE . This unique, short-term living environment can accommodate pets, partners and possessions which historically have been the barriers to many folks in encampments and living on the streets not wanting to enter the current single adult shelter system. Center focus is on all guests entering into intensive case management with streamlined exits into housing or treatment.

Meals are provided by the Meals on Wheels Program and Center guests can access as many meals during the day as they wish.  "Sunday Suppers"  would be a special meal where congregations would volunteer to cook, deliver and serve a meal for up to 75 guests.  Since the Center's kitchen is limited to a refrigerator, freezer and two small microwaves, the food would have to be prepared and brought to the Center hot and ready to serve. The Center does not have a fully equipped kitchen for cooking or heating food.

Meal Preparation Responsibilities will include:

  • Plan and prepare a full meal consisting of:
    • A main dish - typically a protein rich dish such as a meat or poultry
    • Side dishes - one starch and/or a vegetable dish
    • Simple Salad - greens and chopped vegetables recommended
    • Dessert - a sweet dish (cake, pie, or ice cream)
  • Procure food and ingredients needed for the meal.
  • Prepare food in appropriate tin steam trays, pots or flat trays as needed. Please note that the Navigation Center has no stoves; therefore, all food must be cooked and delivered hot and ready to serve.
  • Prepare the meal with the utmost regard for food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Coordinate transportation of food to the host site. The Navigation Center does not have the ability to transport food.
  • Deliver the meal by 5 pm being ready to serve the meal by 5:30 pm.
  • Center staff will set-up the Navigation Center Dining Room and will be ready to assist in unloading the food from your vehicle and assisting in serving and in cleaning-up.
  • The Navigation Center will provide paper plates; paper cups; napkins; plastic eating utensils; paper towels; hand sanitizer; dish soap and serving gloves.
  • Serving utensils such as - tongs, serving spoons and spatulas should be brought by the Congregation. Additionally, congregations are encouraged to bring special serving equipment (if needed); cooking knives; serving utensils and aprons.
