Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful blistering rash caused by the reactivation of varicella-zoster, the same virus that causes chickenpox. The CDC estimates that one in three people will get shingles in their lifetime. Once you have chickenpox, an inactive form of the virus remains in your nerve cells. When the virus is reactivated in your nerve bodies it creates a painful, red, blistering rash that usually presents on one side of the body. Prior to the breakout of the rash, you may feel pain that radiates from the site, increased sensitivity in the area, and some may feel ill with fatigue, muscle aches, headaches and possibly even a fever. The virus is treated with an oral antiviral medication which should be started within 48 hours of the onset of the rash.  The rash can last anywhere from 1-3 weeks, but the pain may continue well after the rash heals.  Post herpetic neuralgia is pain that persists for 30 days or longer after the rash has resolved. There is a vaccine available, which is recommended to those over 60, to decrease the chance of developing shingles and post herpetic neuralgia.
