Sunday Service Sept. 14:
Mental Illness - No Time for Shame or Blame
The sermon focuses on the seemingly never-ending problem of shame and blame associated with mental illness. We know with some certainty that 1 in 4 adults suffer from some form of mental illness. The key word is "illness" and the fact that we also know that a great deal of mental illness is caused by factors we cannot control. Other illnesses have come a long way regarding the removal of stigma - cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes, polio, and others are now being spoken of "in the open." Tom will share information from his own experiences and those of his family regarding hesitancy, denial, and finally acceptance of mental illness.

Speaker:  Tom Reardon
Facilitator:  Tricia Gerrodette

Sunday Service Sept. 21:  What We Deserve
In this time of injustice, many people are speaking about what we deserve, while others are questioning supposed entitlements. Rev. Christiane will explore this topic and see how it relates to our culture, our UU community, and our lives.

Christiane's Contemplations
We have been through quite a year in the last 12 months together.  You got a new minister, you changed the name of your church, and you not only moved, but bought your own building.  Those are a lot of big changes, in quite a short span of time.  Many of you are telling me how excited you are about these changes, and still - change is stressful.  There are checklists for personal stress, and predictably they will include things like job loss and illness, or a death in the family.  Surprisingly, they also include promotions, weddings, and winning the lottery.
As a congregation, we can be aware that many of our members are still recovering from a whole lot of change in a short span of time.  That can allow us to be gentle and forgiving with one another.  It also may cause you to ask me for some time, especially if you have questions about what changed and why.  Remember, my role as a minister is not only to prepare and deliver sermons.  It does not stop at board and committee meetings either.  My job includes supporting and being available to you, individually and as a group, and I welcome your emails and calls for support or requests for appointments.  While my time availability is obviously not limitless, I will do my best to make myself available.
Let's have a gentle fall in the amazing, changing, celebrating church.
With much Love and Gratitude for all of you,
Rev. Christiane Heyde

Reminders

If you are the last one leaving the building, please make sure the coffee pot(s) are unplugged, the 2 thermostats are turned off, the lights are off including the lights/fans in the bathrooms and all 6 doors are locked.

On Sundays, please come in by the glass doors so you can pick up your name tag & the order of service.  That way the entry via the imitation wood doors will be used by newcomers so they can be greeted.  This will also serve to relieve some of the congestion in that entry way.

Let's Help Our Neighbors

The Restoration Christian Church across the parking lot from us is petitioning the City of Sierra Vista to change their existing building permit to a church designation.  There is a Planning and Zoning Commission public hearing at City Hall @ 5PM on Tuesday Sept. 16 and another public hearing with the Mayor and City Council on Thurs. Sept. 25 @ 5PM.  We can attend both hearings and submit positive comments about the proposed change.  The Restoration Christian Church was the entity that got our church permit and so saved us the effort.  So let's help them if we can.

Religious Education Update by Rev. Christiane Heyde
The religious education program at Sky Island UU is starting the fall with a delightful UU Picture Book Curriculum, which was graciously loaned to us by the UU Church of Tucson.  The preparation for the teacher is minimal, and the program is versatile for various ages and fun for the children.  Delightful picture books are matched up with the UU principles and fun activities.  Rev. Christiane can show you how easy it is to run a class with these new materials.  Teresa Longmore [email protected] has volunteered to coordinate the schedule for the teachers.  Please let her or Christiane  [email protected] know if you would like to teach our RE class for a Sunday.  We are also looking for those presenting stories of all ages in the service, and for youth group leaders.  We have several teens in our congregation now, and they deserve their own group.  Thank you for supporting our amazing young people in our congregation!
