Sunday Service January 18 @ 10:30AM: MLK Day for the 21st Century

Rev. Miller is visiting us from the San Diego area and will give the sermon today. MLK led a deeply meaningful movement firmly rooted in his faith in the era of his life. The question is, what are we doing, grounded in our faith, for the needs of the 21st century?

Christiane's Contemplations

"Sacred flexibility":  A term I was introduced to as soon as I arrived in this congregation a year and a half ago.  It apparently goes back to Rev. Rod Richards, this church's first minister.  I find surprises every day which affect my schedule and expectations for the day, especially in ministry.  Just this week I was struck again by an experience which evoked sacred flexibility.  For months now, I had prepared for John McQuaid's memorial and talked to one of his kids about it, only to find out the daughter from out of town changed her mind and wanted to lead the memorial service instead.  It seemed better to stay out of the family conflict and allow them to have a peaceful memorial service, than to insist that John had asked me to speak.  Flexibility.  It is often uncomfortable and my initial response might be to resist the changes.  I find that the sacred part of flexibility is the detachment, letting go of what I thought, what I had prepared, what I "knew" to be right.  Releasing expectation and resentments, while being open to new ways the day may unfold, - that gives me new energy, and a new lightness.  While the service for John proceeded without me, I remembered my many visits with him, and how I treasured getting to know this man.  I also treasured the last time I visited, just before church on a Sunday morning, and saying good bye.  He died within the hour, while we held our service that day in September.  He was peaceful dying, and I was peaceful remembering him. As soon as I surrender to this sacred flexibility, gifts appear, gifts of gratitude or memory, gifts of forgiveness and perspective, and gifts of peace and healing.  May we continue to make wonderful plans, and then share in a joyful and sacred flexibility, as life happens and surprises us, yet again!
Love, Rev. Christiane Heyde

Dear Friends of UUJAZ:

February 16, 3rd Annual UU Day at the Legislature (DATL)

As we look toward the New Year, here's a date we hope you will put on your calendar!  On Monday  Feb. 16, UUs from across the state will gather at the Capitol Plaza in Phoenix to meet with their legislators and form relationships that we will exercise throughout the 2015 legislative session. Please register @ UUJAZ and let us know you're joining us this year! It will help us plan meeting rooms and lunch preparations! We will provide a sack lunch again this year. It worked great last year to have lunch available right on the plaza.

Training for DATL  January 31: 10AM-Noon @ Mt. Vista UU Church 3601 W Cromwell Drive, Tucson   Sharon Travis will be going up for the training, and can take three other people if anyone is wanting to attend.  The training is helpful for anyone who has never participated in DATL previously.  For more information or to car pool, contact Sharon Travis:  [email protected] or 520-432-2210.  Departure from the church parking lot on January 31 at 8 a.m.     Jay Jenkins is also going if anyone would like to car pool with him.  [email protected]

Though the training is scheduled for 2 hours, it will probably take less than an hour.

Sky Island UU Church Information

Children's Religious Education 1/18
The children will read "Henry Climbs a Mountain," a book about Henry David Thoreau.  He fought for justice by using civil disobedience. Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., were also inspired by Thoreau's writings.

Update:  Recovery Support Group Sunday January 25 @ Noon  in the Minister's Office

The Sky Island Recovery group began
1/11, and it was decided to continue to meet every other week for a while.  Anyone affected by addiction, alcoholism, compulsivity, or emotional challenges is welcome to attend.  We will read from the UU book "Restored to Sanity," followed by open sharing.  There will not be a prayer.

Sunday January 25 @ 1PM:  Sue and Lex Herron  Presentation on their Italian Trip
Join Sue and Lex as they make a presentation for church members and friends about their trip to Italy last Fall-  specifically their travels to Venice, Florence, Piza, Sienna, Naples, Pompeii and Rome. There will be lots of emphasis on art and sculptures so you don't be shy about looking at the nude human form.  The presentation will be in the Sanctuary @ 1PM so there is time for refreshments or a quick lunch after the service.

Migrant Donations

A gentle reminder that migrant donations should be put in the Church Office, located between Fellowship Hall and the Sanctuary. Please don't put any donations in the Minister's office as that is for her use. Thank you all for your generous contributions!  Jay Jenkins

Outing to Desert Museum Feb. 21
We are planning a trip to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum!   We will car pool from the church parking lot, leaving at 10 a.m. that morning.  Consider bringing a sack lunch (there is a restaurant on site, but it is a bit pricey and somewhat limited as to dietary considerations), and your own water supply.  The Museum no longer sells bottled water (environmental considerations).  You'll want to wear comfortable walking shoes...easy walking for many, but lots of it...great exercise!
Fees are as follows:
children under 3 years-FREE
children ages 4-12:      $6.00
Teens 13-17:             $15.50
Adults 18-64:            $19.50
Seniors 65+                $17.50
Some passes will be available for those not able to pay the admission fee. Please contact Sharon Travis if you are interested in going:  [email protected], 520-432-2210.

Religious Education Volunteers Needed
Teaching our children is one of the greatest gifts we can contribute to our future and to a better world.  Sky Island UU is currently following a simple "Picture Book Curriculum," based on one book to read, and a couple of simple activities to do with the children to connect to the principles and values in it.  Please contact Rev. Christiane or Teresa Longmore  [email protected] to sign up to teach or learn more about our program.  A schedule is posted in the Religious Education room.  We also have an opening for youth group leaders, if you are interested in hanging out with the teens on occasional Sunday evenings.

Sky Island Poetry Anthology
Poets (you know who you are), don't delay. Hand your poems (in folders) to Pamela Lee or put the folders in the box in the office. The committee is eager to get started organizing the material. 25 submissions per person are now acceptable. Let Pamela know if you need more time than the present 14 February deadline.

Vision & Mission workshop today, Friday 1/16 & Saturday 1/17 @ UU Church of Tucson 4831 E. 22nd St.
It is not too late to go to the Mission and Vision workshop this weekend, Friday 1/16, from 7-9 PM, and Saturday 1/17, from 9 to 4.  Here are some contemplation questions Rev. David Miller sent to us.  This "homework" questions are to be contemplated but not to be shared by with others.   What do you feel is the mission of your congregation?  What are your hopes for your congregation looking 5 years down the road?   How would you like to work with other congregations to support
yourselves, each other and regional Unitarian Universalism moving forward?

UU Amado "Against Doctors Orders: Healing with the Power of the Mind." January 18
Joe Pinella was on the front page of the Dec 26 Arizona Daily Star.  He's an amazing man having overcome incredible odds with his healing practice. He's coming to UU Amdao to share his story and offer his Healing Movements System.
The Healing Movements System, is derived from QiGong and Tai Chi Kung, with breathing techniques, graceful movements and visualizations to stimulate the flow of qi, or "the life force", and promote healing and health.

This program is helpful in relieving arthritis pain, increasing circulation, improving cardiovascular fitness, as well as improving balance. Easy to learn, it often brings relief after the first session. It is a community practice for all ages.
