Sunday Service Sept. 21:  What We Deserve
In this time of injustice, many people are speaking about what we deserve, while others are questioning supposed entitlements. Rev. Christiane will explore this topic and see how it relates to our culture, our UU community, and our lives.

Christiane's Contemplations
After listening to last Sunday's sermon online @ PODCAST, I was very moved, and grateful for Tom Reardon sharing so openly and personally with us.  His sermon on "Mental Illness - No Time for Blame or Shame" seemed to hit a nerve for many.  I had just been to see one of our members on a pastoral care visit in a psychiatric facility that Sunday, and was acutely aware of the fragile human core we all share.  The next day I heard that another member was unstable and hospitalized.  We are all vulnerable in our own way, at various times in our lives, and we are given an opportunity to work through our weaknesses, with support.  Sometimes the support is hard to come by in this busy and noisy world of ours, and considering these thoughts, I am all the more grateful for our congregation.  Acceptance and support can indeed be had here, in this church, no matter if someone's weakness is mental illness, physical frailty, addictions/alcoholism, or relationship problems.   Our challenge is to remember that others are vulnerable, sometimes obviously distraught, but often under a tough or calm exterior.  In social gatherings, we can be considerate and ask before offering alcohol, for instance, if we do not know if alcohol is safe for that person to drink.  We can ask if a quiet person really wants to be left alone, or would like to talk one on one.  Rather than taking it for granted that all of us are "peachy-keen on top of the world," we can assume that all of us have struggles at times, and some of these struggles need the support of this community, and in this time.  Let us know deep within that our vulnerable human spirit is not a theoretical idea, but is real for our members, friends, and visitors, - as is the deep love and compassion we can show one another.  May this be a time for us to show dignity and respect for one another, as well as caring and concern, in this beloved community.
Rev. Christiane Heyde

Dear Friends at Sky Island UU,

Sunday, September 7 was our annual water service, when we pooled ourselves together as one community. During that service we called for rain, and our prayers were answered in ways we couldn't have imagined.  Monday, September 8 saw record rainfall for Tucson.  The rain overflowed our parking lot, filling it with dirt and debris, and flooded our sanctuary.

Over the course of Monday and Tuesday (9/8-9/9), we were reminded of one more part of our Sunday service.  During that service, we sang that every river, every ocean, every rain storm, is a blessing. It's possible to regret those words, but our rainstorm and flood did bless us. Volunteers from our sister congregations in Amado and Sierra Vista (Jay Jenkins) traveled to Tucson to help our congregation begin restoration. Our Pacific Southwest District of the UUA made a significant financial donation to assist in our clean-up efforts.

To our Sierra Vista family; we thank you. Our ties are deep, and we will not forget them.

Thank you,

Michael Herman

Religious Education Update by Rev. Christiane Heyde
The religious education program at Sky Island UU is starting the fall with a delightful UU Picture Book Curriculum, which was graciously loaned to us by the UU Church of Tucson.  The preparation for the teacher is minimal, and the program is versatile for various ages and fun for the children.  Delightful picture books are matched up with the UU principles and fun activities.  Rev. Christiane can show you how easy it is to run a class with these new materials.  Teresa Longmore [email protected] has volunteered to coordinate the schedule for the teachers.  Please let her or Christiane  [email protected] know if you would like to teach our RE class for a Sunday.  We are also looking for those presenting stories for all ages in the service, and for youth group leaders.  We have several teens in our congregation now, and they deserve their own group.  Thank you for supporting our amazing young people in our congregation!
