Christiane's ContemplationsMarriage Equality has come to Arizona! On Friday, 10/17, Arizona officially became the 32nd state where same sex marriage is legal. 125 ministers from Unitarian Universalist as well as United Church of Christ churches stood at court houses all over our state to offer free wedding ceremonies for the happy couples. The Sierra Vista Court was the only one I heard about who said they would not offer same sex licenses that day. They finally said to wait until Monday, so after spending Friday afternoon at the Bisbee court house, I spent Monday morning at the Sierra Vista Court. David and Margaret Carlstrom joined me, bringing roses for the couples, and serving as witnesses when I was honored to conduct a wedding ceremony right in front of the court. What a joyous occasion! Our lives in Arizona are changing! At the same time we need to be aware that gay people can still be fired in more than half of the states, including Arizona, just for being gay. We have a long way to go on our road towards justice and equality, but major steps were taken this month, and we can celebrate together. Thank you for having voted 4 years ago to become a welcoming congregation and to take an active part in advocating for the LGBT community. Love is love, and you make a difference! With Love and Gratitude,
Rev. Christiane Heyde

Also from Rev. Christiane Sky Island Membership Membership is a privilege, and comes with responsibilities. As UUs, we covenant together to be part of a caring community. For those wanting to join our church, or those wanting to know what being a Unitarian Universalist is all about, please join Rev. Christiane on Sunday, 10/26, at 12:15 for a Newcomer orientation. Empty Bowls Sunday We will have special guests speaking about hunger in our community, and we will have our traditional feast after church. Several different soups will be offered, with home made bread, and all are invited to join us for lunch after church. Donations for the soup will be collected for our annual food bank drive. Come and let us eat together, and fight hunger in the process!

To Members and Friends of Sky Island Unitarian Universalists
We wish to inform you that the board of trustees has been in the process of evaluating Rev. Christiane Heyde's performance as a minister as part of the board's duties. Earlier this week we had a meeting with her to share information. This open communication between the board of trustees and the minister is crucial not only for her development as a minister but also for the health of the congregation. Sky Island UU is the first congregation where she is serving as a minister; therefore we share the responsibility (as a congregation) in her professional development as a minister. All of your feedback has been crucial to this process. The Committee on Ministry also participated in this meeting helping to set goals of shared ministry, clear communication, and cooperation in leadership. We are all excited to participate in shared ministry together and find ways to continue to support our minister. We are sorry if there has been any confusion in this whole process. With love, respect, and gratitude we serve this community. Thank You, Sky Island UU board members

Sunday Service October 26: 7th Annual Empty Bowls
We will have two guest speakers for this service.
Indicators of Food Poverty and Understanding Food Deserts in Cochise County
Evelyn Whitmer is an Area Agent for the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. She will describe Food Deserts in Cochise County. She will also explain how poverty affects the residents' overall health and well-being.
Fullness from Emptiness: Feeding Millions from an Empty Bowl
Barry Midgorden will talk about the Empty Bowls Project. From its humble beginnings almost 25 years ago, this project has focused on feeding people locally, while increasing the awareness of hunger and food insecurity globally.
The empty bowl that inspired a world wide movement provides a metaphor for creating our own lives and a concrete vehicle to help others in our own community. From emptiness comes a form and function through which compassionate caring may feed and heal.
Sermon: Evelyn Whitmer & Barry Midgorden
Facilitator: Carolyn Edwards
2nd Collection is for the food banks of SV and Bisbee. Please make checks out to Sky Island UU Church with a notation of 2nd collection or food banks.
