Christiane's Contemplations
"Until we are all Free, we are none of us free."  This quote by Emma Lazarus, often repeated in various ways by MLK and others since, echoes through our state of Arizona, as we are approaching Marriage Equality.  Freedom to Marry organizer, Rev. Debra Peevy, has been meeting with liberal religious leaders across the state to make sure we can offer free weddings for same sex couples the moment that the courts allow.  UCC ministers as well as UU ministers have volunteered to be there, and congregations have been asked to support them, possibly by handing out flowers to anyone receiving a marriage license, and providing non-alcoholic bubbly to toast for those who have a ceremony on the court house steps.  At this time, almost 100 ministers are ready to perform court house step ceremonies at a moment's notice.  Currently, I am assigned to the Sierra Vista Court office at 100 Colonia De Salud, #100, and my UCC colleague Rev. Tina Squire will cover the Bisbee court house at 100 Quality Hill.  We hope to let all of you know by Facebook, email, and/or phone when the decision comes down.  Please come to either location to support the celebration of civil rights.
While it is wonderful to celebrate legal rights for LGBTQs in Arizona, we have not arrived.  Most people can still be fired in this state simply for being gay, and we have a way to go to make life fair and safe.  Big changes are sweeping the country, though, and celebrations are in order.  Thank you, dear Sky Island UUs, for choosing to be a welcoming congregation in 2010, and for making a difference for so many!
With much Love and Gratitude,
Rev. Christiane Heyde

It is the season of Halloween, and many masks are already appearing all around us.  At the same time, some faith groups have questioned the sanctity of our Unitarian and Universalist traditions and values for centuries.  Christiane will take a look at the various myths and even conspiracies that led to the current image and idea of Satan.

A Tax Planning Hint from Edna Weigel

If you normally take the standard deduction on your tax return, ask yourself if you gave enough to the building fund to allow you to itemize deductions for 2014. If so, it might be to your tax advantage to donate during 2014 some portion of what you pledged to give in 2015. It will be easier for our treasurer if you don't wait until the last minute to make any early donations.

Talent Sunday Sign Ups

Many of you signed up for talents, interests and opportunities a couple of weeks ago, while others were absent on our "Talent Sunday."  We will post a small version of our sign up lists on the wall in Fellowship Hall for the next couple of weeks.  That way all of you get a chance to add your names to the groups in which you might want to be active.

Memorial Service
