Sunday Service November 23:  Making Meaningful Covenant
Rev. Matthew Crary from the UU Congregation in Amado comes to our pulpit this Sunday as our four "Baja Arizona" Unitarian Universalist congregations exchange ministers. While Rev. Matthew is in Sierra Vista presenting a sermon, Rev. Christiane will be in Amado with his congregation doing the same. Our faith tradition is based on covenant, telling us that all our relationships are sacred. If this sounds like a big responsibility, that's because it is. Within our covenantal history are both the means and meaning to our covenant today.

Sermon:  Rev. Matthew Crary
Facilitator:  Merrie Longbottom

The 2nd collection is for No More Deaths; Please make checks out to Sky Island UUC with a notation of 2nd collection or No More Deaths.

Sunday Service November 30:  Giving Thanks
At this time of Thanksgiving, our hearts are more aware of gratitude and its sweet power on our lives.  Congregants are invited to contact Ellen and Rev. Christiane with readings, poems, and personal shares as we prepare a wonderful service in which many voices are heard.

Facilitators:  Ellen Taylor and Rev. Christiane Heyde

Christiane's Contemplations
November, the month of Gratitude and Thanksgiving, or the month of shopping frenzy and credit debt?  Since this month started with a heart attack in my home, we decided to definitely simplify our lives.  We notified my relatives in Germany that we would not do a present exchange this year, and at least some of them were relieved as well.  I may even skip writing my annual Christmas poems, summarizing the year, one in English and one in German.  That is a lot of pressure and never simple, so unless I am unexpectedly inspired, I will skip it this year.  Making choices to let go of family tradition to keep things simple feels unfamiliar, but also feels right and good.
I am very grateful for simplicity, in whatever forms it shows up.  Going for a walk, and noticing the light reflected on the mountains, that is simple beauty.  Holding the hand of a loved one, feeling my cat purr in my lap, or smiling at my congregation while the offering basket is going around, those are moments of simplicity, and moments of immense gratitude.  These are the ones I want to treasure this season and these are the moments that can set the mood for a relaxing holiday season.
And then there are moments of celebration!  I certainly look forward to feasting and celebrating with the congregationaI service at our Thanksgiving Potluck, Thursday 11/27 at 1 PM, and our Christmas Potluck Dinner on Christmas Day, 12/25, 1 PM.  Plan to bring food and games and to have fun as a community.  And if you like the idea of simplifying your life:  Just think how much nicer it is to cook just one dish, and still get the whole holiday feast!    May your Thanksgiving season be filled with Gratitude and simple pleasures, and may your holiday season be low stress and full of joy!
Rev. Christiane Heyde

From Your Stewardship Committee:
It's time to start thinking about next year's church programs and budget. Since our fiscal year starts on July 1, we can imagine many of you thinking, "Already?  We just started the current fiscal year."  Yes already, because the budget needs to be presented to the Board no later than January.

We hope you will start thinking about the current programs and what level we should be funding them, and also new programs such as a part-time Religious Education Director, and/or a part-time Church Administrator, and/or something else entirely.  Committee chairs will soon be asked to provide committee budgets.  If you have thoughts about the mission and activities of any committee, please let that committee chair know what you are thinking.  Here is a list of the current committee chairs:

Building & Grounds:  Dave Weigel
Care Teams:  Frena Gray-Davidson
Committee on Ministry:  Jennifer (Ginger) Ryan
Communications:  Kerry Hales
Membership:  Molly Anderson
Office Volunteers:  Uda Gordon
Safe Congregation Team:  Edna Weigel
Social Activities:  Virginia Farrar
Social Action:  Currently Vacant
Stewardship:  Jerry Beale
Sunday Services:  Rev. Christiane

"Giving brings happiness at every stage of its expression.  We experience joy in forming the intention to be generous; we experience joy in the actual act of giving something; and we experience joy in remembering the fact that we have given."
Lama Surya Das quoting the Buddha

Sky Island UU Church Information

Youth Religious Education 11/23
The children will read the book "Granddad's Prayers of the Earth" and explore the 4th principle, to search for what is true. They will specifically address thanksgiving and gratitude as it relates to relatives and prayers.

The Doorbell Update:
Several of you have come by the church and knocked, only to leave when no one heard you.  There actually is a door bell, located at the double glass doors on the right side of the building. The bell is much louder than any knock, so please ring it to be let in.

Table Service for Refreshments
We have lots of disposable paper and plastic plates, cups. glasses, forks, spoons, etc.  They take up a lot of room, are not recyclable, and end up in already overfilled landfills.  Please do not donate more to the church.  We have an energy efficient dishwasher, so after we use up our current disposable supply, let's use our reusable tableware and help Mother Earth by doing so.   Terry Z

Empty Bowls
There are still some pottery bowls left over from our Empty Bowls project.  They are on the table in Fellowship Hall.  They are free, but if you would like to make a donation to the Emergency Assistance Fund, the blue donation box is on the same table.

New Members
When you become a member of Sky Island UU Church, you also become a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and are entitled to receive a copy of the magazine UU World, which is published by the UUA four times a year.  If you do not start receiving the magazine within 60 days of joining, please email [email protected] or talk to Terry Z, Keeper of the Directories

Gratitude Sunday:
On November 30, we will have an opportunity to bask in gratitude together. Rev. Christiane will be there, and everyone else is also invited to contribute to the service. If you have a reading, song, question, poem or any other gift to offer, please contact Rev. Christiane,  [email protected].

Sky Island Holiday Celebrations:
Thanksgiving Potluck  11/27 @1PM
All those who want to join us and celebrate Thanksgiving together at Sky Island UU are invited to come and bring a dish on Thanksgiving, 11/27, at 1 PM.  If you are willing to be the contact person to coordinate the offerings, or want to already commit to what you are bringing, please email Rev. Christiane at [email protected].

Christmas Eve Service 12/24 @ 6PM
We will have our traditional Christmas Eve Service at 6 PM, followed by light refreshments.  The service will include carol singing, and a UU version of the La Posada Play.  Please join us!

Christmas Dinner 12/25
Let's have a Christmas dinner together again this year, coordinating our potluck contributions to make it a feast!  Whether you are single and want to join others on Christmas, or you want to come as a couple or with your whole family, please plan ahead and consider joining us that day.  More details will follow soon.

Purchase of Artwork for the Church
I have heard that there are several friends and members of our congregation interested in purchasing some of the beautiful art work displayed in our fellowship hall, and donating a piece or two to the church, to be displayed permanently in the sanctuary and other locations in our building.
I would be interested in joining with others, each contributing a little, to make such a purchase possible.  If you are interested in being part of this effort, please contact Sharon Travis, [email protected] or 520-432-2210.
Salvation Army in Need of Turkey Cooks
The Salvation Army is in need of volunteers to cook turkeys for them for Thanksgiving.  They serve veterans, disabled, homeless and low income families.  They also need pies, rolls, etc. to be donated.  For additional information, see the bulletin board in the kitchen or please contact Sue Neeley at the Salvation Army at: (520) 459-8411.
