" Thank you for making yesterday [May 15] a success! Got it done! Olivier said last night that the meeting was a "watershed" day for dentistry. Will start on next year..."

Opening Remarks by Dr. James Metz

"In my opinion, this was the first time in the history of medicine and dentistry that a true bridge was created between the two disciplines. This is the first meeting that I have attended where true science was the focus of the entire meeting, not just conjecture. Dr. Metz did a wonderful job organizing the meeting and making it become a reality, and Dr. Metz is to be congratulated!!"
Dr. John Tucker

"It was incredible to be part of the Interest Group on Dental Sleep Medicine. Becoming colleagues with world-class researchers such as Dr. Peter Cistulli and Dr. Olivier Vanderveken is a real honor. I am excited for dentistry's future within the American Thoracic Society; it will take us far in the quest for the best treatment for our patients."

Speakers at the Meet the Professor Session titled "Chomping at the Bit: Oral Appliances for OSA" included Fernanda Almeida, PhD, DDS and Jonathan A. Parker, DDS, as well as James Metz, DDS and Richard Schwab, MD.

"Dr. Metz is an incredible leader in dentistry. He has formed an alliance with Dr. Gozal, an incredible leader in medicine. Together they may lead us out of metric based insurance driven narratives that have nothing to do with patient physiology and wellness. One day medicine may stop treating symptoms of disease and start promoting wellbeing for our patients."
Dr.  Brian Vence

"I was so proud to be part of this special interest group. The support from the ATS was evident, and the room was filled with key practitioners and researchers in dental sleep medicine. The future for sleep medicine is encouraging with this partnership."
Dr. James Blank

Mark your calendars to attend the 2017 ATS International Conference on May 19 - May 24 in Washington, D.C.
Amidst the many excellent speakers and insightful presentations, I particularly enjoyed this topic by J. Craig Venter, PhD. - Dr. Metz
Supercomputers can analyze enormous amounts of data, and use algorithms to predict your life span and the development of diseases in their genesis. Dr. Venter believes "Human longevity is not just about trying to make people live longer; it is about trying to create a healthy life span."
Within this paper, Dr. David Gozal discusses the concept of
"Big Data"
to really start to analyze trends within disease patterns, and this study has a sample size of 1.7 million patients, and 1.7 million matched controls, which is astronomical!
Dr. Mickey Harrison

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent condition but studies exploring the burden of OSA-associated comorbidities have been limited by small sample sizes with underrepresentation
of women. In a large, nationally representative sample of working and retired people, OSA is strongly associated with significant comorbidities in both men and women with unique sex differences emerging. We queried the...
