It's Time for the Sloan Duck Race!

Duck Race

Every year, Sloan Elementary is the proud sponsor of our very own "Duck Race."  This beloved event is tons of fun for the students, and it benefits a great cause! ALL proceeds go directly to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on behalf of our own "Team Sloan."  This year's Race is on May 2nd.

The students will meet at our creek, cheer on the ducks, and enjoy popcorn and freeze pops at the pavilion afterward! It's a wonderful day for a very worthy cause. A Party will be awarded to the classroom that raises the most money.

Contributions to the American Cancer Society are welcome. We plan to repeat our success from previous years and hope that through the generosity of the families at Sloan, we will reach our goal. If you would like to make a donation, please print out the form here and send it in with your child. Please make checks payable to Sloan PTO. As always, thank you for your generosity and support!

Committee Chairs Still Needed

We are thankful for the parents who have volunteered to Chair various committees for the upcoming school year. We still have several committees without a Chair. Here are the outstanding Committees still in need of a Chair:
  • After School Programs
  • Clerical
  • Science Event (demo portion)
  • Staff Appreciation Lunch
  • 3rd Grade Garden Club

**note: all but Clerical can be organized at your convenience outside of school and school hours. For more information, check the pto website and we strongly encourage you to reach out to current committee chairs. The staff appreciation lunch, and after school progams (if we do one more) are upcoming, so you can even shadow this year!**

We're Feelin Groovy with the Book Fair

Save the date for our Spring Book Fair! This fair's theme is
Feelin' Groovy  Book Fair: Peace, Love, BOOKS! A culture is born when books, flower children, and some great music come together to create a scene our Sloan community can really dig.

Your child will be brining home additional information for the book fair that will run the week of may 16-May 20th.

If you think you can join us for setting up, during library times or cleaning up,  here's how it works in 3 easy steps:
1) Click this link to see our Sign-up on VolunteerSpot:  http://vols.pt/ai7Wrz
2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like.
3) Sign up! It's Easy - you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on VolunteerSpot.

Fifth Grade Farewell

It is hard to believe that our fifth grade students will be wrapping up their days at Sloan and will be heading to the Middle School in the Fall.  To celebrate the closing of this chapter of their lives, we will be honoring our fifth graders at the Fifth Grade  Farewell .  This year we will say  farewell  to them with a carnival-themed event on  Tuesday, June 7, 2016 .

To make the night a success, we rely on parent volunteers.  If you have any questions or would like to volunteer your time, please email Theresa Gutierrez at  altered2@aol.com  or Tonee Girdis at  gtgirdis@comcast.net .  Stay tuned for more information.

Science Extravaganza Fun Night Wrap-Up

We hope that everyone enjoyed the Science Extravaganza Fun Night this month. It was our first year of combining the traditional Science & Arts fair, with our Science Night.  There was an overwhelming positive response about the combined event and many parents felt it was nice to have "more to do" in one evening.  There were 14 demonstration stations brought to us by teachers, students and various organizations.  Thanks to our very own Dr. Brecht, the SNHS students & Mr. Sunny, and Mary Beth Renze and the FR Robotics Team and Ms. Ritson and her middle school students.  Also, thanks to PPG, The National Aviary, and the Murrysville Historical Society.    There was an amazing 128 projects submitted for the Science and Art Fair portion. We would like  to thank all of the aspiring Scientists and Artists for their amazing work.  You should be proud of your hard work and incredible ideas - keep it up!

Here is the list of the Science & Art Fair winners:

A huge THANK YOU to our PTO Committee Chairs who worked so hard on this explosive event: Theresa Gutierrez, Carla Williamson and Stephanie Murray.  Thanks to the parents who helped setup & take down projects  on Friday night, the teachers who helped with judging, Mrs. Burns and Ms. Dusetzina for their help and support, and the janitorial staff who helped so much with the setup, tear down and reorganization.   PS - for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year, we are in need of someone (or some two) to chair the science night portion of the event.  Please email  sloanptopresident@gmail.com  if interested.
