Welcome from the Board

Welcome back, Sloan families! As your new Executive Board we are very excited to begin what we hope will be an amazing year for the PTO.

One of our overriding goals is streamlined communications, and we are hoping to find more families using our electronic options this year. Since you are reading this message, you have already subscribed to our eNews, but if you haven't already, check out our Website and Facebook Community for the latest information, tips and forums. AND... throughout this coming year, keep an eye out for fun photo galleries, contests, activities and announcements popping up exclusively online.

While we will continue to use paper flyers this year to announce our important events, we hope to move further and further away from this as more families join eNews, so...invite a friend, save a tree, and defeat the mountain of mess that comes home in your child's backpack.

We look forward to meeting and seeing all of you at PTO events this year!

Your Executive Board:

Jennifer Taylor

Pam Rowell

Michelle McFall

Debby Rhea

Wendy Lindeman

SECURITY

You have no doubt noticed some additional security changes happening at the school. We will keep you posted as to how these affect PTO events and volunteerism as the need arises, but allow us to remind you again that, more and more, clearances are becoming necessary for school involvement.  You can find all the details for obtaining your clearances here.

HELP FOR STRUGGLING FAMILIES

Sloan PTO is pleased to announce a new committee this year that has collected school supplies for needy families in our school. If you have extra items that you would like to contribute, you may send them in with your child in a baggie marked "PTO Backpack Committee." Those who are struggling to afford the items on teachers' supply lists may speak confidentially to their children's counselors to request items.

Additionally, the PTO has made provisions to offer financial assistance to volunteers who are unable to afford the fees associated with applying for their level one clearances. Those wishing to request this benefit should plan to actively serve the PTO as a volunteer during the school year. To request this assistance, applicants may contact Jennifer Taylor at sloanptopresident@gmail.com. All information regarding requests will be kept confidential within the confines of the Executive Board.

MEETING REMINDER - MEET OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT!!

The new Executive Board is looking forward to seeing you at our first General Assembly Meeting on Tuesday, September 10 at 6:30 pm in the LGI. Our new District Superintendent, Dr. Jamie Piraino, will speak at this meeting. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear his plans for the district, and ask any questions you may have.

We also plan to bring to a vote this year's Budget, as well as some minor changes to our PTO Bylaws. In the interest of time, we will expedite this process by not going through the document change by change at the meeting. If you are interested in comparing the original and edited documents before the vote, please see the links below.

Many Committee Chairs will also be on hand for those interested in volunteering this year.

If you have any questions, you may email Jennifer Taylor at sloanptopresident@gmail.com.

Wear a Hat for Cancer

This day-long event will raise vital funds to help benefit children being treated for cancer.   Students may make a $2 minimum donation in exchange for wearing a hat to school on Friday, September 20th. All donations will directly support the needs of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. It is a fun day for the students and teachers at Sloan, while supporting a wonderful cause.

If you have any questions, please contact the Chairperson of Wear a Hat for Cancer.

Book Fair

Walk like an Egyptian....straight to the Sloan Book Fair! From September 16 through September 20, 2013, during their regularly scheduled library time and during Open House on Sept. 16th and/or 17th, Sloan students will take an exotic journey to Ancient Egypt, where they will have the opportunity to discover (and purchase) literary treasures at every turn!

If you are sending money, remember that all items are subject to 6% sales tax, so please include this in your check or payment. Please make checks payable to "Sloan PTO" and include your phone number. Change will be given for checks made out in excess of the amount of purchase.

Profits made at the Book Fair benefit the PTO, as well as our school and classroom libraries, by allowing us to add the newest and finest titles to our collections. Plus, the Book Fair gives you a rewarding and memorable opportunity to be involved in our school and with our children. The Book Fair is an exciting and wonderful way to help children associate reading and books with fun, instead of just homework.

Please look over the Scholastic Book Flyer sent home with your child to preview some of the books offered at our Book Fair, including many of this season's big hits.

BONUS: Check out our website.

Please consider volunteering during your child's library visit and/or during set-up, clean-up or during Open House nights. The students greatly appreciate having help finding and selecting books during the Fair.

All for Books

Please look for the All for Books slips sent home with the Scholastic Book Flyer (or CLICK HERE to print yourself) and donate just $1. All signed book slips will be displayed at our Book Fair. All money collected goes directly to purchasing more books for our school! We thank you for your participation in this effort!

For any questions or concerns, please contact Book Fair Co-Chairpersons Kate Sell at katesell3@gmail.com, Jodi Vollero at jodispat@yahoo.com or Robin Wareham at jeffham@att.net.
