Message from the Board
 

How can it be that our summer is over and Halloween candy has been in the stores for weeks now!  It felt like school supplies were already picked over in July at Target.  Well, time waits for no one and whether we like it or not, school has officially begun (and summer has officially ended)! 
 
Our Board and Committee Chairs are already hard at work, many before the school year even started.  We have another great lineup planned for this year and hope you are ready to help us make 2016-2017 a STELLAR school year.  Everything we do is based on volunteers.  We encourage all to be involved - dads, moms, even grandparents!   "Many hands make the job easier."  We are appreciative of whatever time parents can contribute; not all needs are during school hours.  There is truly something for everyone.
 
September is a crazy month for all us with trying to get back into our routines but our PTO wastes no time packing in a number of activities (check out the Dates to Remember section at the bottom) like Spirit Sales, Book Fair, Bake and Clothing Sales, Open House, and the always-popular Josh & Gab assembly.  October will focus on Fall Parties and the 3rd Annual Dance-a-Thon. We received a lot of positive parent feedback about the reduction in the number of fundraisers so we will continue to focus our efforts on the Dance-a-Thon to be our PRIMARY fundraiser for the entire year.

(3) PTO Year at a Glance - new this year!  Be on the lookout for our one-time packet of information.  You will want to hang on to this information and reference it throughout the year!
 
These will be our primary means of communication this year as we continue to be fiscally and environmentally responsible with our use of paper flyers and forms. Flyers/Forms will be posted onSloanPTO.com under Parents/Flyers & Forms; some will be sent home in hard copy.  Newsletters will NOT be sent home in hardcopy. 
 
We look forward to working with our wonderful Sloan students, parents, teachers and administration.  Please visit our PTO table at Open House to introduce yourselves and learn more about what we do, and how you can make a difference.  You will get to meet our Board and see many of our Committee Chairs in action by visiting the Book Fair in the  LGI, and Clothing Sales & Bake Sales in the front lobby.

3rd Annual Dance-A-Thon Fundraiser

Get those dancing shoes warmed up because we are about to whip and nae-nae (is this still a thing?) our way to another awesome Dance-A-Thon.  We were incredibly successful with previous Dance-a-Thons (2014 raised $12K, 2015 raised $16.4K).  We will again focus on this ONE PRIMARY FUNDRAISER and we are challenging ourselves to EXCEED last year's achievement.  Our 3rd Annual Dance-A-Thon goal is $17,000!
Lots more information will be coming home soon. We will be e-blasting our volunteer needs, and there will be a lot of flexible spots to fill.  Remember, this is our PRIMARY fundraiser, so please consider this when donating, seeking sponsors and/or providing us with a little bit of your time. Students raising $50 or more will earn the newly designed DAT T-shirt!

Read Up, Me Hearties at the Bookaneer Book Fair

Arrggh!  Get ready for the Sloan PTO Bookaneer Book Fair: Where Books are the Treasure!  It will be a swashbuckling celebration of reading with hundreds of fun, engaging, and affordable books for kids to discover. 

Students will dare to journey into open books during their regularly scheduled library periods during the week of September 12-16 for grades 1-5 (Kindergarten does not attend the fall book fair).  Kindergarten parents, or those who want to shop around with their little mates can visit during the school's three Open House sessions on September 13-15 from 7:00-8:00 - "X" marks the spot in the LGI.

Be on the lookout for materials and volunteer forms coming home in backpacks very soon.  Please consider lending a hook... arrggh, hand, during your child's classroom visit or any time convenient for your schedule. Homeroom Parent and Classroom Volunteer Information


Being a Homeroom Parent for your child's classroom is an opportunity for organized, fun loving parents who crave to be an integral part of their child's classroom. 

As a volunteer, you will be able to meet your child's classmates, experience your child's interactions with their teacher and peers,and most of all, see the pride in your child's face when you are there to share special times with their class.

More information will be coming home with your child(ren) soon. Please look for the purple paper to fill out and return by Friday, September 9th.

Spirit Sale
 

It's time to look forward to Spirit Sale Days for the 2016-17 school year! Next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, September 7, 8, and 9 from 8:45 AM to 9:00 AM,tables will be set up at the Kindergarten Ramp and near the LGI. We will offer water bottles ($2), pencils, stickers, tattoos, beads (25 cents), stampers (50 cents), and bracelets ($2.50) again this year. Stadium towels will be $4. This year we are excited to offer color changing stadium cups for $2 as well as foam fingers for $3!

Several Spirit Sales are planned over the course of the year. Reminders for the sale dates will be posted on the website, in the PTO newsletter, and announced during morning announcements at Sloan.

In order to keep the sales manageable and so they don't interfere with students' academic schedules, we ask that everyone follow a few simple rules. They are as follows.

1. Two tables will be set up. Students are to shop at the table closest to their classrooms. Shopping closest to students' classroom will help them to be sure to get back to the room in time for morning announcements.

2. Students will be limited to buying two sets of beads at any given sale. Beads should be kept at the student's desk during recess to avoid accidents on the
playground.

3. In the interest of getting students to their classrooms on time, temporary tattoos will not be applied at the sale table. Tattoos should be applied at home or by the students themselves.

Sloan Student Directory
 
Want to schedule a playdate with a classmate but don't have their phone number? Want to send a party invitation to your classmates but don't have their address?  Then be sure to include your information in our Student Directory.  The Sloan PTO will be publishing a Student Directory for the 2016-2017 school year by the end of October.  

Inclusion in the directory is strictly voluntary. We receive NO information from the school.  The form will be sent home with your children by 9/9.  Please fill out only 1 form per family.  T he form and CASH payment (no checks!) are due back to the PTO mailbox in the office by 9/21.  Any forms received after this date, will not have the information published in the directory.  You can still receive the directory, if desired.  There is no fee for the electronic copy this year (yeah!!); hard copies will remain at $5.00.

Bake Sale


Bake Sale at the upcoming Open House Events on September 13th, 14th and 15th. We would greatly appreciate your donation of homemade or store bought bake goods to make the sale a SUCCESS.  
Please remember, all proceeds earned will benefit the Students. Sweet donations can be dropped off anytime, either day on the catering rack in the lobby, or prior to the start of  the event. Thanks in advance for being so "SWEET"

Clothing Sale - Get Your Swag On!

 
 
We will be hosting a "traditional" clothing sale again. Shop now for school spirit events or start your holiday shopping early!  LNJ has many nice quality options and many are customizable. You can spot many of our teachers wearing the ever-popular hoodie. Some other popular items were the flannel pants and any of the performance wear.  And you can bling-it-out to your hearts content if you would like.
 
NEW THIS YEAR: ONLINE ORDERING!!!  Now available at http://www.lnjspiritwear.com. The site will be up and running by September 6, 2016 for the Sloan Fundraiser. Please note: when ordering from the website, make sure to select the "Sloan fundraiser" and add the 2 Kids With Backpacks icon to your cart and fill in the requested information in order to ensure order delivery directly to your child's classroom.
 
Samples will be available for try-on at Sloan's Open House night (September 13, 14 and 15). You may also drop your order right at our Open House table if you wish. When sending your order form to school with your child, please send payment via check, payable to Sloan PTO, and drop in the PTO mailbox in the office.  Please write on the envelope "Clothing Sale." 
Note: cash will be accepted at the Open House only, but exact amounts only please. 
 
Forms will be sent home next week. The order form & website will also be available at the Open House, on the PTO website and on our Sloan PTO Press Facebook page in case you misplace it. 
 
Deadline for ordering is Friday September 23.
 
A few Open House volunteers are needed to: set up, attend the table, collect order forms, assist customers looking at the samples, and break-down. We will work around schedules so that volunteers are also able to participate in the Open House. If anyone is available for an hour either night (6:15-7:15 or 7:15-8:15), please contact Sue Salata (smy62358@hotmail.com) to volunteer or to answer any questions.



Have a ball with a Fall craft!

Join us for some fun painting after school on Wednesday, October 12 from 3:45-4:45 pm!   The staff from the Crafty Shack will be on hand to assist students in painting a pumpkin mug.  It is just the thing for those cooler fall nights!  Projects will be glazed at fired at the Crafty Shack and returned to school in time for the holiday.

To register your child, please complete and return the form here Forms and money ($12.00 per child) MUST be returned by Friday, September 30th. No forms will be accepted after this date. We will also need several volunteers so please consider helping out that day as well.

Fall Family Fun Night 2016
 

Keep a lookout for FUN!!!  Fall Family FUN Night, Sloan PTO's annual social event is coming up soon.  Planning is just getting started, but past activities have included: dancing, games, entertainment, photo ops, face painting, goodies, a cake walk and more. All in all, it's a fun night for kids to share their school with their parents, and have a blast with their classmates. 
 
Details about this year's event will be coming home very soon in backpacks, onsloanpto.com and on the Sloan PTO Press Facebook page.  Anyone who has special skills that they'd like to share for the event, or who wishes to help plan or volunteer on the night of the event, should contact the planning committee at DiMieriTaylor@gmail.com


Birthday Books
 
Will your child be celebrating a birthday in September?  One unique way to commemorate your student's special day is with a Birthday Book from Sloan Library!  For just a $6.00 donation toward the book's cost, your child can choose from our new book section on the Birthday Book Shelf AND be the very first one to check it out! 

Your child's selected book will include a personalized dedication plaque, and a picture of him/her holding the book will go up on Sloan's Birthday Wall outside the Library.  For a Birthday Book Form and additional information, please click here, or visit the Library Resources section of Sloan's webpage.  Proceeds from Birthday Books go toward the purchase of more books for our Library collection.


Franklin Regional High School Playschool Program
 

The Franklin Regional High School Playschool program is now accepting applications for the fall 2016 session.  Playschool is a preschool age play program that is open to any child who is 3, 4, or 5 years old.  This program serves as a learning laboratory for the Child Development II students at the high school.  It is a wonderful program where preschool-age children and high school students learn from one another.

The fall and spring session will both take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 8:55 -10:35 am.   We limit the number of students for each day, so please sign up early.  The fall session begins  Tuesday, October 11th and the spring session will begin  February 13th.

Backpacks 2 Go
 

The "Backpacks-to-Go" Program is sponsored by our Franklin Regional community which includes our PTO, teachers, students and their families, and area friends.  The program is coordinated by school counselors.  We will provide a backpack filled with easy-to-prepare meals and snacks for weekends to our children.  This program was developed in response to ongoing student needs with no weekend access to the school breakfast and/or lunch program.

Here's how the "Backpack-to-Go" Program works:
Children enrolled in the program, by parent request, will take home a backpack with nutritious food in a safe, easy and discreet manner on the designated Fridays.  The food items and included menu suggestions may be used for breakfast, lunch and dinner for  Saturday and  Sunday.  Some of the child-friendly foods may include: peanut butter and jelly, applesauce, pudding, cereal, granola bars, bread, macaroni and cheese, soup, fruit snacks, instant oatmeal, and canned pasta. 
 
The students will return the backpacks  on Monday morning to be re-filled for the next designated  Friday.  We will be offering the "Backpacks-to-Go" on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month with adjustments made for holidays.  By meeting basic needs of our children, we hope each child will be better able to focus on learning.
