Architect
and Historic Preservation Consultant Tours Downtown
Milford |
|
Margaret Westfield, RA of Westfield Architects
& Preservation Consultants leads DMI volunteers on an
architectural tour of Milford's downtown commercial historic
district. The purpose of the tour was to look at architectural
features and overall characteristics of numerous existing
properties and to consider what types of physical improvements can
be made (with reference to paint, signage, color, material,
lighting, etc.) to better market the businesses and better
compliment existing downtown architecture. Westfield's services
were made possible by the State of Delaware Main Street
program.

From the desk of
Lorraine J. Dion, CMSM
Executive
Director, Downtown Milford, Incorporated
The National Main Street Program's four-point approach to
successful downtown revitalization are organization, promotion,
design and economic restructuring.
Organization - Getting everyone working towards
the same goal by building consensus and cooperation among groups
that have an important stake within the community.
Promotion - Selling the downtown district's
positive image to residents, shoppers, investors, new businesses
and visitors.
Design - Getting the downtown district into top
physical shape by capitalizing on our historic buildings and
traditional downtown layout.
Economic Restructuring - Finding a new purpose for
enterprises in the downtown area by recruiting new businesses to
respond to today's market and assisting existing businesses to
expand.
