Our Savior's This Week

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Dear Church,

Have you ever been perplexed, as I have, by the terms "disciple" and "apostle"?  Do they mean the same thing?  I realize that you probably don't stay awake at night worrying about this, when there are so many other pressing issues to worry about (the Vikings' winning streak, the decline of "The Macarena" at wedding receptions, Starbucks or Dunn Brothers?, etc).  But aren't you at least curious?
  • To be a disciple means to be a follower; a student who is learning a way of living, a person who is dedicated to a belief system.
  • To be an apostle means to be sent out.  This would be a person who has been given a task, or a purpose, or a mission to be accomplished.

Can you be both?  Can you be a disciple at the same time as you are an apostle?  The 12 friends of Jesus certainly were.  For three years they journeyed with Jesus, soaking up everything he said and did, and seeking to apply it to their lives.  But Jesus also called them to reach out to others in mission...even as they were still learning the ropes of discipleship.  Sometimes, he would even send them out for a day trip, and they would gather at night, with Jesus asking "So...how'd it go?"  And the teaching would resume.

How about us?  Do we see ourselves as disciples; learning a way of living, dedicated to following a person or a practice?  Do we see ourselves as apostles; sent to help a neighbor or a stranger in need?  Are we a servant or a leader? Are we both?  Are we neither?

This Sunday I want to talk about what it means to be a servant-leader.  In a world where people are one or the other, I believe Christians are called to be both.  I hope you'll join us Rally Sunday!  Our worship times return to fall routine (8:00, 9:15 & 10:30), and our children return to discipleship classes.  What are you returning to?

See you in Church!

A Note from Joshua Rau
It is with great sadness that I must inform you that I will be leaving Our Saviors Lutheran, effective September 23. After much thought, and conversation with family and Pastor Steve, I have decided to take a position of Ambulance Director in Lamoure, ND. This is a move that will be beneficial for me and my family. I have come to know many of you and call you my family. I have been honored to direct wonderful groups here and I will dearly miss this congregation.  ~  Joshua Rau

Openings available in our Families First classes!
LADC believes very strongly that the parent is the first and most important teacher! "Our Families First" is a weekly child/parent program that gives parents the opportunity to enjoy classroom activities with their child, in addition to meeting with a Parent Facilitator for a parenting class. During the parent meeting, teachers provide class time with the children, in a schedule similar to ECFE (early-childhood family education). Discussion subjects cover a variety of topics, including faith formation in the home, behavior management, parenting styles and more! Contact Dawn Alitz for more information.
