The Saskatchewan Soccer Association (SSA), in conjunction with the Sport Medicine and Science Council Saskatchewan (SMSCS), is very pleased to announce a series of sport medicine workshops, which will be available to coaches and team personnel in 2015 and 2016.

As a part of the Grassroots, Recreational and Competitive Stream Plans, these workshops will support coaching development and equip participants with new knowledge to support athlete participation and development.

The first sessions, which will take place in advance of the outdoor playing season, will focus on injury care and prevention, and return to sport following injury.

With few teams within the Grassroots, Recreational and Competitive Streams having access to sport medicine support on a regular basis, these sessions, which will be delivered by highly trained and experienced SMSCS Consultants, will provide coaches and team personnel with a foundation to support athletes under their care during the playing season.

Workshops will take place in Saskatoon and Regina on the following schedule:

Sunday, April 19/15 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm

Location: Executive Boardroom at Evraz Place

1700 Elphinstone Street, Regina, SK S4P 2Z6

Consultant: Scott Anderson

Saturday, April 25/15 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm

Location: Cosmo Civic Centre Theatre

3130 Laurier Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7L 5J7

Consultant: Bruce Craven

Topic(s):

Injury Care and Prevention

(10:00 a.m.to 11:30 a.m.)

Return to Sport Following Injury

(11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.)

Workshops are free to attend for any registered coach or team personnel in Saskatchewan; however, participants must register in advance.

Space is limited in each workshop and registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

For additional information on these sessions, please visit the SSA Website

The SSA would like to thank the SMSCS for their support in this initiative as well as the Regina Soccer Association and Saskatoon Youth Soccer Inc. for partnering in the delivery and promotion of these opportunities.

SK's Own Brett Levis Signs Pro Contract With Vancouver White Caps
I had a chance to speak with Brett on the phone from Vancouver and took the opportunity to ask him some questions of my own.
- Jen Ellarma, SSA Coordinator Communications and Funds Development

For Saskatoon's Brett Levis, it all started on the fields of Community Soccer. "I would have to go way back. I was part
of the Saskatoon Youth Soccer Club and my Mom was actually the coach. T he fondest memories I have was playing Club soccer, when I was probably 7 or 8 years old," he reminisced about the beginning of his love for the game. Levis won a provincial high school championship in 2010 with the Centennial Chargers and represented team Saskatchewan at the 2009 Canada Games. Read more about Brett's story HERE.

A Fairplay award is also given out. The award is based on the votes of the officials on the conduct of the players, coaches and fans of each team.

HPDC
High Performance Stream Update

Faribault, Minnesota, a small city just south of Minneapolis played host to the Shattuck-St. Mary's Under 17 Girls Showcase Event from February 5th to 9th, 2015. Twenty players of SSA's HPDC Female Program were there to demonstrate their skills and aptitude on the field, during a series of matches over the course of the event.

We played well and came together on the field,"said Canada Soccer Women's National EXCEL Pr ogram select, Sarah Ochitwa. Participating in her first Showcase; she was excited to be out on the field with the girls on her team and how it brought them all closer together.  All of the players in attendance were in the High Performance Development Centre, or previously identified through other High Performance programming.

Players included: Jacqueline Altrogge, Taylor Bubnick, Breeann Colibaba, Brianna Davidson, Claudia Erikson, Jaedan Gardner, Anna Glasgow, Courtney Hufsmith, Ashley Kambeitz, Keelin Kennedy, Ally Labach, Brynn Nash, Sarah Ochitwa, Kassidy Parisien, Keara Quinn, Emmarie Racine Hallin, Megan Ripplinger, Briana Rutledge, Kira Stilwell, and McKenna Wiebe.

Attending the Showcase with the team was Coach Terrol Russell, Chris Zoeller (Assistant Coach), Chelsea Guebert (Physiotherapist, Sports Medicine Staff), Garnette Weber (Apprentice Coach) and Ashley Kambeitz (Player/Goalkeeper Coach).

With close to 100 schools represented by scouts in attendance, this event was more then just about the score at the end of eighty minutes. "We have received confirmations from UNC, Notre Dame, Central Florida, Boston University, Maryland, Rutgers and several other Big 10 schools," Joe Demay, Shattuck-St. Mary's Director of Girls Soccer commented about the caliber of the schools making an appearance at the Showcase.

"My goal is to go to a Division I School one day and play for the National team someday," said Ochitwa. "I felt like I pushed myself, like I could do more than I thought I could. Every game down there made me feel stronger and better," she noted about her time at the Showcase. With attendance on scholarship as a main player outcome for the HPDC Program, it is progress to see players like Ashley Kambeitz set to attend Cumberland University in Tennessee in 2015. HPDC continues to build upon its Plan, focused on providing a high-quality training environment, world-class coaching and support, while offering high-caliber competition opportunities.

With aspirations to one day play against Abby Wambach, Sarah continues to be a player to keep your eyes on. She continues her journey with the Canada Soccer Women's National EXCEL Program, competing throughout the continent, as an HPDC Player and is working hard to represent Saskatchewan at the upcoming Western Canada Summer Games, in Fort McMurray. Undoubtedly, a great nominee for the 2014 Youth Female Player of the Year.

The next opportunity for these U-17 Players is hosted by the Ventura County Fusion Soccer Org. from April 15th - 19th, 2015 in Ventura, California. This will be shaped as a Development Project, rather than a Showcase. "During this trip the Training to Compete Stage 1 HPDC squad will be matched against Premier athletes from South Californian Club programs and the South Californian Olympic Development Program.  This allows for our identified athletes to have their initial international exposure in a very competitive environment but with an appropriate level of pressure," described HPDC Head Coach, Terrol Russell. "During the travel period athletes will partake in daily team preparation meetings, sport science integration and team building exercises, a minimum of three matches, a minimum of three training sessions, and recovery sessions in the Pacific Ocean," he added.

Players who will be in attendance: Claire Abrey, Olivia Fredrickson, Makayla Gaspers, Reagan Gerhardt, Madison Goertz, Cassidy Hayward, Sara Johnston, Ellyce Kuiack, Cindy Li, Bailey Link, Madeline, Lischynski, Sydney Loehndorf, Haley Mercier, Skyler Munro, Rylie Schneider, Nicole Solie, Caitlyn Spurr, Sydnea Stein, Claire Stillwater, Hunter Wakefield, Hailey Weber, and Alicia Woodland.

Coaches, Terrol Russell, Huw Morris (Mentor Coach), Adele Bandet (Apprentice Coach), Jennifer Waldner (Apprentice Coach), and Chelsea Guebert (Sports Science Team Member) will all be accompanying the team to the Golden State.
L-R: Kassidy Parisien, Keara Quinn, Taylor Bubnick, Brynn Bowles, Lauren Petras, Kira Stillwell, Claudia Erikson, Sarah Ochitwa

Provincial Selects Program

On March 14th and 15th, 2015 in Moose Jaw, SK, 111 Training to Train PSP Players (2003 to 2001), both male and female, took to the field for training and competition during their second of three Showcase Weekends in 2015. Energy on the field was heightened, as they played in front of Provincial level coaches, evaluating each player on their performance. Following the final showcase weekend on April 11th and 12th, 2015, 4 travel rosters (2 Female teams and 2 Male teams, along with injury reserve players) will be selected to progress to Phase 2 of the program, which focuses on Competition. Scheduled on July 3rd - 5th, 2015, players will participate in a pre-competition training event, prior to the Pacific Challenge at UBC from July 13th - 19th, 2015.

In conjunction with the PSP Showcase Weekends, player evaluation also continues in the development of the roster for the Western Canada Summer Games in Fort McMurray, AB.

The second of three weekend sessions for 2015, 60 Male players from all over Saskatchewan battled hard at every end of the field. Once again, players selected from the program after April's showcase will be chosen for Phase 2 of the program. A pre-competition event is set for July 20th - 26th, 2015. The female program will seek to identify players during the 2015 Indoor Showcase League games. Players selected in this program were born in 2000, 1999 and in some cases, early maturing 2001's.

As part of the HPDC Plan, weekends like this provide, "exposure of Saskatchewan Training to Train athletes to the demands and expectations of Provincial level soccer programs."

Who's Who?
Getting to know Lara Schroeder -
Coordinator of Member Services
A Worldly View of Sport and Working with People

It must have been a cold, but unforgettable experience for our Coordinator of Member Services, as she committed 2 months of her life to be a Team Assistant Volunteer for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. Assisting Slovakia during the Olympics and Norway during the Paralympics, Lara assisted the teams' operations and duties and tasks over the span of the Games to support the teams' successes. Surely,a remarkable experience. A long flight and a bit of jet lag later, Lara was not soon after beginning her work with the SSA.

Lara earned a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Studies, focused on Recreation and Sport Administration from the University of Regina. Accompanied by a Diploma in Recreation and Tourism Management from SIAST, and experience with Capacity Building and Project and Event Management, she brings with her a wealth of knowledge to this position.

Furthermore, Lara has contributed to the growth of several sport organizations, including the Saskatchewan Blind Sports Association, Golf Saskatchewan and the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics Games Organizing Committee in Innsbruck, Austria.

A s the Coordinator of Member Services, Lara is responsible to promote and nurture the growth of member services within the SSA to drive strategic direction. Centered around providing guidance, education and resources for Member Organizations, Lara's work also encompasses New Member Applications, MAP Grant program delivery, other member programs like SoccerJams, and Strategy Development.

Since joining the SSA in 2014, Lara has helped to coordinate a full-scale review of the Policy and Procedures Manual including the recently released Formal Complaints and Appeals Policy, coordinated four Conexus SoccerJams in four locations across the province and continues to develop Grassroots Workshops, which will include a  Classroom and Technical learning component, in conjunction with a  full face-to-face review and sit-down between the Member Organizations and SSA Staff.

Bringing to life the strategies created from the Member Consultations in October 2014 and the SSA Strategic Plan, Lara looks forward to hitting the road and helping to paint a better understanding of the landscape of soccer in this diverse and wide-spread province.

An avid referee and volleyball player with the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association, student of languages, musician, traveler, and volunteer, Lara is making miles all over the world and making a big impact along the way.

Lara will be sharing her plans for Member Services in 2015 and how she plans to execute the SSA Grassroots Workshops and grow Club Excellence in the Province next weekend in North Battleford.
