Huskies Historic Season

The Saskatchewan Soccer Association would like to congratulate the players, coaches, and team staff of both the Huskies men's and women's soccer teams as they made history this year.

The Women's Huskies team had their best finish in the team's history, winning 2-0 over the University of Alberta Pandas in the bronze medal match on November 2nd.

Also on November 2nd, the men's team won their first-ever Canada West Championship. The team meet the University of Alberta Golden Bears in the final, coming back from being down 2-1 at half to win 4-2.

The men's team advanced to the CIS National Championship in PEI.  In their first match they faced UPEI, and after a hard fought game, lost in overtime. The team's next match was the consolation semi-final versus the Montreal Carabins and with a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation time. After a hard fought and very well played match however, the team did not advance from penalties.

Both teams represented their province well, and the Saskatchewan Soccer Association couldn't be more proud of their accomplishments throughout the season.

Visit the Huskies Website for further information and stats on this memorable season!

Player Profile: Soccer for Life Participant - Steph Cooley

One of the primary purposes of the SSA is to create life-long participation in soccer; to create community and develop individuals.

The majority of the effort at the SSA level and Member Organization levels is focused on youth.  We thought it would be interesting to hear from Soccer for Life participant Steph Cooley.

Steph has played soccer across six decades, from pick-up games with her family on the farm, to Western Canada Games and national championships.  At 62 she still plays and for her it has always been a family affair.

5 Tips for Engaging Youth Volunteers

  1. First, recognize youth are resources in your own thinking. Acknowledge that they have a perspective you don't but that you need.Young people's brains are often unfettered by "no". Adults have often been told too many times that their ideas won't work; systems are too hard to change. But youth haven't repeatedly heard that message, thus they often have more freedom to tackle problems with enthusiasm, courage and out-of-the-box thinking. Use that resource!
  2.

  3. Ask them to do good. Ask them to make the world better. Ask them what they think; ask them to get involved, to help, and to share their gifts.
  4.

  5. Look for and engage youth from their sparks (their interests and talents). When a youth is actively involved in his spark, he is following his innate purpose and will be fully engaged in what's going on. Challenge them to tap into their powers and use them for good.
  6.

  7. Mix it up. Involve youth volunteers in a variety of opportunities. Expose them to different community needs and ways to contribute. Help them find their passion and voice.
  8.

  9. Let youth work side-by-side with adults. Working next to adults expands youths' perspectives and feeds into their own sense of purpose as they hear why adults are giving of their time.

Webinars

Are their SSA programs you would like to know more about? Is there something the SSA can do to assist your member organization?  If so, there are likely others who are interested in the same idea!

With that in mind, SSA Staff are available to develop webinars for topics of common interest, whether they are technical in nature or administrative.

Please forward your ideas to Coordinator of Member Services, Lara Schroeder,[email protected]

Kevin Wagner Named ACAC Men's South Coach of the Year

Please join the SSA in congratulating Kevin Wagner, SSA's River West Coordinator! Kevin is the head coach of the Lakeland College Rustlers and has recently been named both ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) Men's South Coach of the Year, and CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association's) Men's Soccer Coach of the Year.

In addition to his successes with the Lakeland College soccer programs and leadership within the Meridian Youth Soccer Association, beginning in 2015, Kevin's role within the SSA will be shifting in focus. Although he will continue to serve as a resource for Member Organizations in the Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation, Kevin's focus will shift to providing leadership in the development of futsal in Saskatchewan. Futsal is a variation of soccer that is played, five-aside, on a basketball-size court and is the official indoor game of FIFA. Kevin's responsibilities will include the development of an introductory manual for futsal, as well as programs and services to assist existing and new Member Organizations with the development of futsal programs. In addition, Kevin will be assembling a work group of the province's leading experts in futsal to assist in developing a strategy and supporting the implementation of futsal programming throughout Saskatchewan. For additional information on futsal or if you are interested in becoming involved in the futsal work group, please contact Kevin at [email protected].
