Spotlight on Diane Smith

Diane Smith is a community activist and leader who finished her training as a social therapist at the East Side Institute last June. She learned about social therapy while taking classes at UX, an open school for continuing development for people of all ages at the All Stars Project. She was attracted by the community activism, social empowerment and development focus of social therapy.

Diane is a leader of the Family Ministry program at the historic Antioch Baptist Church in Bedford Stuyvesant. The church's theme is "Restoring Life by Destroying Barriers" which is the centerpiece of Diane's work. She is on a mission to bring people of all races and backgrounds together to build community. She has organized the Family Ministry to host Friday Night Community Circles, a program which affords the congregation a unique opportunity to build together with what they have rather than focusing on what they don't have. Diane also does family counseling at the Church and at Planned Parenthood. She helps families to go beyond the familiar competitive family roles to create new performances of family growth. She is also on the Church's Board of Trustees and is a member of the Medgar Evers College Community Council.

We are proud and thrilled that Diane has chosen to take her social therapeutic skills out to empower the poor communities of Brooklyn. Go, Diane!
