Announcing New SHS board members

P resident-elect:
Ashley Benedict, Ph.D., systems redesign coordinator at VA Sunshine Healthcare Network, is a current board member. Ashley is a 13-year SHS member and will continue to share with us her 12 years of professional experience in both provider and academic settings, most recently with the Veterans Administration. As you saw in the ballot, Ashley is a past day chair of the SHS Annual Conference and has extensive connections with other Engineering-related organizations. Her most recent board role has been as liaison to the Student and Academic Committee.

Director:
Evelyn Brown, Ph.D. professor at East Carolina University, has been an SHS member for six years and has been active in many SHS committees in that time. Most recently, Evelyn has co-chaired the Student Case Study Competitions at the past three SHS Annual Conferences. She brings more than 20 years of professional experience, most notably an academic background which helps fill a much needed gap in the board's professional diversity.

Director:
Lauren Todd is a senior management engineer at Intermountain Healthcare. Lauren is known most visibly as our SHS Newsletter Editor, but has been a volunteer with SHS since her undergraduate days at the University of Florida. Her first involvement in SHS was a very successful one - she won the SHS Student Paper Competition in 2006! Lauren also brings significant non-provider experience to the Board, again adding to its professional diversity.

Also joining the board:
Dean Athanassiades--Secretary
Rudy Santacroce--Treasurer

Using Big Data to Make Wiser Medical Decisions
As the chief information officer of a large academic medical center, John Halamka, M.D., oversees four petabytes of data. Is that "big data?" He has little difficulty storing, securing, and accessing it, so he's not sure it qualifies as big. To him, the bigness of data is not its absolute size, but the task of transforming it into wisdom . At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), they use big data to create real-world applications that lead to wise clinical decisions for patients. That's something any forward-thinking provider must aim for in today's data-driven health care environment.
Toronto engineers: Saving lives by helping patients get to hospital faster
For North Americans, it can be easy to take emergency medical services (EMS) for granted. But in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh there is no EMS system, no centralized ambulances, and no 911 service. Justin Boutilier, a PhD candidate in industrial engineering working under the supervision of Professor Timothy Chan (MIE), hopes to close this health-services gap in developing countries.
