"Back to School" and start of the year information from Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!

Solomon Principal Newsletter: August 15, 2016
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I hope that everyone had a fun summer--traveling, reading, working in the garden, and doing whatever it is that you do to enjoy our Chicago summers. Between trips to the pool, concerts in Millennium Park, and some road trips with the family, I am refreshed and excited for the new year.

Below you will find some helpful information regarding the start of the school year. I am excited to build on the success of last year and to continue to shine a light on the amazing things that we do here each day.
Parent and Student Handbook
Looking for information about entry and dismissal procedures? Our entry procedure when there is bad weather? The uniform policy?  Grading policy? Check out our Parent and Student Handbook!

Anything that you would like to see added to the handbook? Please email me at [email protected] to let me know!

Way to go, Girls on the Run!
Our 3rd-5th grade runners, along with a special helper, visited Swedish Covenant Hospital this past July as a part of their group's commitment to service in the community. Congratulations for showing your Cougar Character, and a big thank you to Coach Kaplan and Coach Tamborino for organizing the event.

Network 1 Back to School Event

The first day of school – Tuesday, September 6 – is coming up fast, and we want to make sure you have everything you need to start the year off strong.

To help students get excited about the start of school, and to provide families with helpful resources, CPS will be holding Back-to-School events across the city. Network 1 will host their Back to School event on August 22nd at Albany Park Multicultural Academy from 10am to 1pm.

This festive event will include:
  • lunch courtesy of Aramark
  • a DJ provided by I Heart Radio, along with other child-friendly entertainment
  • inflatables and games
  • giveaways and raffles with items donated by CPS partners
  • a medical van for help with required forms
  • valuable parent resources

Students will have the chance to meet new classmates, reconnect with friends, and earn a digital Back-to-School Badge.

For families, it’s an opportunity to answer all your questions before the first day of school. Our event will feature a Solomon information table so you can obtain health forms and other important materials necessary for the first day of school. Additional information will also be available from other CPS departments
Early Bird Day/Community Picnic

Friday, September 2, 3-5pm

Early Bird Day gives you the ability to come to Solomon before school starts, checking off some of those important back-to-school tasks.

Come to school any time between 3-5pm to complete forms, join our PTO, pay fees, meet some of our external partners, and drop off school supplies.

Our PTO will be hosting an ice cream social on the playground to give students, parents, and the community the opportunity to re-connect after a fun summer. Use this opportunity to sign up as a PTO member.

PK to 8th grade students are invited to visit classrooms, greet teachers, and meet their new classmates from 3-4pm.
More important upcoming events at Solomon....

August 24: Main Office resumes traditional business hours, 9-4pm. Come by to enroll new students, pay school fees, or submit paperwork.

August 25: Pre-Kindergarten Meet and Greet, 8-2pm, in room 108. PK students and families have the opportunity to visit with our PK teacher, Ms. McReynolds, and aide Ms. Tamborino. For more information, please email Ms. McReynolds at [email protected].

September 6: First day of school, starting at 9am. Coffee and snacks will be available for parents in our library after student drop-off until 10:15am. Meet other parents and celebrate the beginning of the school year.

September 13: Local School Council meeting, 5:30-6:30pm in the school library.

September 17: Save the date for our first Community Work Day at Solomon, times TBD. Parents, students, and community members will be invited to work on various improvement projects at Solomon over the course of the day. More information about the projects available and a sign-up sheet for participating will be provided in the next newsletter.

September 20: Curriculum Night, 6-8pm in gymnasium and classrooms. Meet your child's teachers, learn about instructional and homework plans for the school year, and learn how you can partner with each teacher to ensure your child's success this year. This year we are asking that this is child-free event so that teachers and parents can have rich discussions about the school year. Thanks for your cooperation.

The North River Commission, our community partner in the neighborhood, has created a survey for teachers, principals, parents, and community members regarding educational needs and priorities in the area. The NRC represents 26 different schools, and it wants to hear your thoughts on how we can support public schools on issues such as adequate funding and out-of-school enrichment opportunities in the area. Take the NRC Education survey  here to be heard. Thanks!

Also, keep an eye out an announcement about the annual Peterson Park Improvement Association's State of the Community presentation, hosted at Solomon, later this fall!

Lead Testing Update: We are happy to announce that positive lead test from earlier in the summer has been addressed and remediated. The re-test results show that the fixture in the cafeteria is now well below the action level, indicating that it is safe for use by students and staff. The full results of our water samples, including information on the successful re-test, can be found online at  here.
I am excited to see all students and staff returning this year. Please don't hesitate to call, email, or visit the school with any thoughts or concerns.

If you know of someone who hasn't received this email but would like to be on the distribution list, fill out  this form.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
