FOCUS Film Festival explores documentary and narrative films that celebrate diversity and inclusion. Our vision is of a community that embraces diversity, not as difference, but as a blend of varied and valued contributions.


 

The Festival is a project of Far Northern Regional Center, a non-profit organization that provides services and supports to people with developmental disabilities and their families. The Festival is funded through grants and community donations. 


 

The annual Festival is held in October in Chico, and single screening events are held throughout the year in Chico, Redding, Quincy, Paradise, and Red Bluff.

 

The Festival kicks-off with "The Way Bobby Sees It" on Thursday, October 23 at 6:30 PM, at The Big Room. 


 

The following days of the Festival will take place at SCU Chico Campus.

The 2nd annual Ebony & Ivory Music Series will celebrate with a Grand Finale dinner and piano performance by Dr. Robert Bowman featuring short works by D Scarlatti, Mozart, Schubert, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Gershwin. Dr. Bowman will use the Gottschalk Banjo as an encore. Dr. Robert Bowman, keyboard artist, has performed extensively throughout the United States since 1960 in solo and chamber ensemble recitals.

 

He has enjoyed numerous appearances with an orchestra, as well as multiple performances on radio and TV. He has also performed solo and ensemble recitals in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Japan, and Mexico.  He served as coordinator of the keyboard program at California State University, Chico from 1971-2003, and retired as Professor Emeritus in 2008.

 

The evening will begin at 5:00 pm with appetizers and a complimentary glass of wine followed by dinner at 6:00 pm catered by the Italian Guy with homemade desserts to follow.

 

There will be a no host bar with two wine options and Sierra Nevada beer as well as complimentary non-alcoholic beverages. The menu offers Indian Summer Spinach Salad with Artisan Rolls and Butter. The main course is Roasted Cornish Game Hen with Zinfandel Gravy and a Wild Rice and Jasmine Rice Medley served with Roasted Fall Vegetables M�lange.

 

The Women's Club members will surprise everyone with their delicious homemade desserts. Robert Bowman's performance starts at 7:30 pm prompt and ends at 8:30 pm.

 

The ticket price is $30 of which $18.00 is tax-deductible. The NVCF tax ID #68-0161455, the Chico Women's Club Charitable Fund, in accordance with IRS Requirement.

 

The Chico Women's Club started the Ebony & Ivory Music Series last year to raise funds for the 1911 Steinway Grand Concert Piano Restoration Project.  Their piano is noted as a community gift for all to enjoy and is now considered a world-class instrument.

This is the 26th year of Open Studios Art Tour. There will be over 60
artists for you to visit and experience this year. All the information you need for the two weekends of art exploration is here in the tour guide.

Studios are open from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The number in each artist's listing corresponds to a number and location on the maps. Look for the blue and white markers (see picture right) to help you locate the studios and enjoy the creative output of Butte County's Artists. This is a rare opportunity to interact with artists, see where and how they work, and buy art at
affordable prices from the artist who created it.

The Museum of Northern California Art (monca) is collaborating with area artists and makers for a public Pop-Up event centered around the meeting of art and technology. We will be presenting a showcase of makers, DIY enthusiasts, and artists of all kinds to present their skills and creativity to the Chico community. Our vision is to combine a gallery experience with the added bonus of vendor booths, and areas where DIY demonstrations and presentations can take place.


 

General admission is $5 at the door, and food trucks will also be on site to provide refreshments.

  • Children's Choir of Chico (CCOC) will be Flipping Pancakes and serving a complete pancake breakfast with all the trimmings on Saturday, October 25, in downtown Chico at Bidwell Presbyterian Church (208 W. First St.) to raise funds for their European tour in July 2015.

    Members of Bel Canto, Bella Voce, and community singers will join musical forces and travel to Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg where they will perform inspiring concerts in some of the most beautiful historic locations in Europe. Among the many concerts planned, the Choir hopes to perform for the July 4th celebration at the home of the American Ambassador to Prague.

    Please join us on Saturday, October 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for some pancake flipping and musical fun with entertainment by all choirs of CCOC as well as numerous community performers. Meet the lovely high school members of Bel Canto and other choir members and help send them on their way!!

    The 5th Annual Recycled Art Competition is one of the largest art competitions in Northern California. Students, adults, professionals, organizations and amateurs are invited to enter the competition. Items are to be made from recycled or reclaimed material and are judged by the attendees of the competition. Ribbons are given in three categories (Adult, Child and Organization) and trophies/cash prizes ($200, $125, $75 are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. There is no fee to submit an entry. Over 125 entries were received last year. The event runs in conjunction with the Chico Home and Garden Show and has thousands of attendees. Winners are displayed in the Recology Corporate Office in Oroville for 60 days following the event.

    A Collage demonstration that includes the embellishing and making of creative papers that will be used for  creating and composing a piece of art. Pattern and texture have always been a mainstay in my art.  The layers of paint, papers, and texture tell a story about my journey through the creative process.  The whole process is very exciting and lends itself well to my intuitive way of working.

    Once again, the Chico State Jazz X-Press will offer up some of Northern California's best jazz at their annual fall concert. The Jazz X-Press, directed by Chico State Professor Rocky Winslow, performs jazz from composer greats such as Thad Jones, Count Basie, Maria Schneider, Thelonius Monk, and many others. The Jazz X-Press often includes new originals and arrangements by the students themselves. Check in for updates, as most every concert features some very special guest artists who spend a week doing workshops and other performances at Chico State. All of the rehearsals and other activities are always open to the public. Recent guests have included Bobby Shew, Paul Romaine, Eric Gunnison, Brad Leali, Mark Simon, and Greg Gisbert. Come celebrate Halloween with us as the X-Press offers up some jazz tricks and treats!

    Artist's reception and unveiling of new multi-media drawings on wood panels by Mariam Pakbaz. Mariam's art represents a convoluted catalog of events, objects and stories. The images she makes are filtrations of what she see's using distortion's of her memory as a main source material. Imagination is key to connecting her memory, stringing images together, and grafting fact and fiction. Each piece is finished when it reaches it's own formation and experience.
