EVERYDAY SAVINGS & EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE
New York, NY
Jim and I headed into NYC this past week to catch up on a few shows, visit some Bailey customers, and see the much anticipated Picasso Sculpture exhibition at MOMA. Let's start with Picasso.
Picasso Sculpture Exhibit at MOMA

Potters will love this show! Why? Because most potters are enormously resourceful, love found things, and certainly can appreciate work that is against the grain. This work was controversial at the time and certainly did not fit the preconceived notion of sculpture. Much of the work in the Picasso show you have probably never seen. The work was considered very personal and experimental. A great deal of this body of work he kept to himself and close by, like old friends, until the end of his life.
Picasso uses unconventional materials and techniques to create a fantastic free-flowing body of unimaginably vibrant work ; creatures, people, objects, animals are all represented in his assemblages. Some are made from found objects, many from our favorite material, clay, others from cardboard, metal, and wood. It was obvious to us how much fun he was having with the bits of this and that he had found and used in his work. Whether pushing a Classical Greek clay urn into a creature or taking a sheet metal assemblage and painting women's faces on it, his critical eye and deep sense of design comes through. We were floored by the variety of sculptures that came from his very active and unshackled imagination. Childlike in some ways, especially at first glance, but deeply sophisticated, well-conceived and strikingly beautiful in reality, this work will make you smile, gasp for air, and marvel at their timeless beauty.
Showing until February  7,  2016
 at MOMA in NYC

Betty Woodman

It was timely after seeing the exuberant work at the Picasso Sculpture exhibition to view recent work by Betty Woodman in NYC. Betty's clay career spans over 60 years. In her early career,  she made beautiful loosely thrown functional ware. Sometime in the '70s she broke away from that tradition and started on an amazing voyage of experimentation with clay. Bulbous vases and pillow shaped pitchers were the starting point. Over time, the dialogue became more deeply layered, with references in her work to all kinds of art and architecture from traveling the world and with explosive surface treatments showing her love of folk and formal painting traditions.
The vases we saw, made during the last few years, exude a kind of passion for the material and a confidence in the making and meaning, that carry them into the realm of fine art. Away from any traditional concerns, the work is filled with great emotional content and visual interest. In her vases, one can see a love for the human body and the longing for and pleasure in containment. Her vases embody these longings both artistically and spiritually.
Where can you see her work? There will be a huge solo presentation of new work at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, February 3-April 10, 2016. The show will include ceramics, paintings, wall installations and works on paper. Betty will be 86 next May! Brava!

Peter Lane's New Studio

At the end of our trip to NYC, we visited Peter Lane in Brooklyn. Peter has recently built a gigantic studio outfitted with 5 new Bailey Kilns. While there, Jim found out that Peter had already fired his three Thermal Logic Electric Kilns over 100 times! They have become the workhorses of the studio and he has been extremely happy with their performance. Two new large gas kilns were also installed and Jim came to inspect them and make a few recommendations.

Peter, like many ceramic artists, started by making pots and expanded into making sculptural work that includes huge wall murals, beautifully tiled tables and standing sculptures. His dynamic murals have been installed around the world and he was quick to tell us they have been helped along by his much loved and often used 40" Bailey Slabroller . We are honored to be a small part of his wonderful output and thrilled to see him at work in his beautiful new studio!
