Celebrating Families!

Dear friends,
I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and were able to spend time with family and loved ones.
We have already performed quite a bit this year but our "On the road" tour that puts us on the road for five and a half months begins in less than one wees so we think of this time of year as the start of our season. We will be performing in 15 states and passing through at least 26. it so wonderful to be able to perform as a family. The kids get an opportunity to see this great country , meet interesting people, hear the various accents, try unique food, and perform for down home America.
Along the way we will keep a video blog as well as written blogs, Facebook , and Twitters. We will also be covered by a photo-journalist for part of the tour. Who knows what adventures and excitement l await us. I hope we have the opportunity to meet you along the way.
Sadly there is bad news in this issue thanks to either the incompetence of a promoter or his intentional deceit, of which we may never know. Also the terrible news out of Japan with thousands dead, cities quarantined or utterly destroyed hits close to home since Mrs. Kent is from Japan with her family still living there. Thankfully, her family lives in the south part of the country and all are safe.
Mother nature is in a furry no doubt these days. Our hearts , likewise go out to the folks in Texas suffering the wild fires and Alabama to those who lost so much in those horrible tornadoes. Then there was the flooding and harsh winter. We have, as always been keeping all of the victims and first responders in our prayers, as we suggest you do as well.
Outside the natural disasters there are the man made ones. Like the one you will read regarding the promoter, David Jackson not paying his performers, and his vendors. He hurt us bad keeping thousands after we performed 10 days for him.
But the Kent Family are "glass half full" folks so we know this season will be fabulous. And with the kids developing and growing into new routines it is going to be a very exciting season. For example, Jim has amazed us all again by ever-expanding the things he balances on his face. While at a fair in SoCal he saw a police barricade next to our stage area. He wasted no time picking it up and balancing it on his face....A POLICE BARACADE! Then there is 5 year old Olivia who has started presenting a basic dance Lyra ala Cirque style performance on a custom made dance lyra (a round trapeze ring with a flat trapeze bar like top) while this summer's newest member, Mdiori, performs a full artistic version. Seven Year old Amelia, the World's Youngest female mind-reader and contortionist has added a wonderful dance hula hoop routine with a magical ending. Indiana Miles has added bullwhipping on the tightrope. And I forgot to mention that Jim is now juggling on the wire too. We have also invested in some new illusions including a once of a kind "Twister-decapitation-Vanish- Appear in the audience" trick that was used a decade back at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. Belle the Wonder dog broke a personal record jumping over four audience members holding hoops at our last gig.
So you can see there is a lot of new stuff in store for you at our 2011 show.

Fraud on the Midway
I had to battle with myself as to if I should include this in our newsletter. But as a service to protect others I report to you : David Jackson and his Wife Lisa from West Coast Festivals, Los Angeles Spring Fair and a number of other companies that have come and gone like Faith Festivals, GWS Events, etc vanished a week ago when it was time to pay his performers. None of the performers have been able to reach him. However the newspaper investigating him has, from what I understand. The local paper in Northern LA County (San Gabriel Valley Tribune) will report this week that Jackson didn't pay a lot of people and broke hundreds of promises to sponosrs, vendors, the carnival, and the entertainers. The generator provider was taken for over $20K and the grandstand stage-lights-sound provider was taker for $40K so it has been reported. We were among the entertainers that lost thousands due this couple. So we are putting a general warning out to all venues, performers, sponsors, vendors, and associations that these folks are poison. We can't tell you if the Jacksons are criminal in this. We can say they are very unprofessional, unethical, liars, and hurt many many people, whether on purpose or by incompetence I do not know. There is more on this on our blog. http://victorkent.blogspot.com/2011/04/egg-hunt-practice-la-fair-promoter.html |
Love to Japan
Maybe you knew, maybe you didn't but the matriarch of the Kent Family is Mami (pronounced mommy) Kent. She was born and raised in Japan and as the last newsletter glowingly reported she is a godly, wonderful mom and wife. Her home country as everyone knows was devastated by a series of unfortunate events that have left thousands dead and a nuclear threat not seen since Chernobyl. We wanted to do something tangible for Japan so we have teamed up with the Chico-Japan Friendship Alliance, a group made up of Japanese college and high school students, Americans with a passion for Japanese art and culture, ex-patriots, Mix-marriage moms, and others. The goal is to raise over $10,000 by May 1st and send it the Japanese Red Cross.
Our donation was a full scale theater show at the PVHS Performing Arts Center in Chico, Ca on April 29th. We donated 100% of the money to the cause. Our show will not make a dime from it. We were able to help the group push up and over their goal with our show brining in nearly $3000.00
In the 90s I was living in Japan not far from Kobe when the great Hanshin Quake hit destroying that town. We did a similar show back then as well as visited the shelters. It is our honor to be able to help even though we are half a world away. If you want to make a donation (and no one makes any money off of this) visit the Chico-Japan Friendship Alliance website. http://www.chicojapan.org .
I want to add that the CUSD Center for the Performing Arts is a brand new facility and absolutely wonderful. Everything was state of the art. And I wanted to note how wonderful the audience was. The show was a smash hit! I |

Beauty and Grace on the Stage and in the Ring
This summer the Kent Family welcome, from Japan, Midori Hashimoto, to the show. Midori helped us at the Japan fundraiser by presenting a dance routine after being made to appear. Then, worth only five practice sessions, took to the dance Lyra and presented one of the most graceful and beautiful performances I have ever seen. Very Cirque du Solei. She has agreed to travel and perform with us over the 2011 season. |
