We need you! The following categories will give you an idea of specific volunteer opportunities that are available.

Archives
We need many hands on this committee. There is much to be done to make our collection organized, preserved and accessible. Our archivist will train you for any or all of the following tasks:
  • On-site docents during regular summer hours (Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 from Memorial Day through Labor Day)
  • Data entry
  • Artifact handling
    • Artifact organization
    • Artifact storage
    • Artifact inventory
  • Scanning photographs and newspaper clippings
  • Photographing of artifacts in display cases
  • Matching tags to artifacts in cases




Building and Grounds
This committee takes care of both the inside and outside of our building. Tasks include:
  • Landscaping
  • Painting
  • Mulching
  • General repair
  • Cleaning

Newsletter
 These volunteers are part of our Marketing and Communications committee.
  • Planning the content for two newsletters a year
  • Deciding on a feature article and a writer for it
  • Coordinate with committees to add content
  • Layout and design 
  • Work with a proof reader to create a final copy
  • Work with the printer to produce hard copies for our members who do not have online access
  • Recruiting a volunteer to send out the newsletter


Oral History
Are you a good listener? Do you enjoy sitting with someone and hearing their stories and asking questions to learn more about the "olden days"?
This committee has an immediate and ongoing need for you!
We have a growing list of over fifty people who need to be interviewed.
We will provide you with questions and a recorder. You supply the time and the interest.

Development
This committee is charged with seeking new sources for funding of projects of the Society.
Grants, sponsorships, Legacy Giving and fundraising events are included in these sources.
Funds raised could be used for purposes to include:
  • Capital improvements
  • Educational programs
  • Archiving 
  • Collection development
  • Special projects such as journals, books or film





Membership
Keeping in contact with our supportive members is an important job. Volunteers/Members of this committee will help to :
  • Plan member events in coordination with the Events committee
  • Maintain an accurate, up-to-date membership list
  • Send out the annual renewal letters
  • Send out membership cards to those who request them
  • Refer members who indicate an interest in volunteering to our Volunteer Coordinator
  • Think of new ways to grow our membership base


  
Programs & Events
This committee helps to organize the programs and events that the Historical Society hosts throughout the year.

Programs: We usually offer five educational programs between March and September.

Events: Some of our events include:
  • Antiques Appraisal
  • Porch Party
  • Docent Appreciation
  • Summer programs (June-September)
  • Winter program (March/April)

Jobs include:

  • Set up and clean up
  • Greeter
  • Registration
  • Refreshments
  • Product sales table
  • Audiovisual support


Marketing/Communications
This committee is responsible for promoting and creating the broadest possible public awareness of the Mount Gretna Area Historical Society, its mission, its programs, events and projects and the Historical Society's Museum.
  • Research and write news articles for the twice per year hard-copy MGAHS newsletter (see above) and the periodic one-page e-newsletter.
  • Write news releases promoting Historical Society programs, events and initiatives
  • Design and lay lay out hard-copy newsletters, e-newsletter and program and event flyers.
  • Take photographs at programs and events
  • Greet attendees and promote the Historical Society at various events in the Mt. Gretna area in which the Society is represented, such as the annual Art Show and First Fridays.
  • Work with the Historical Society’s webmaster to ensure complete and updated information on our website.
  • .Expand the organization’s presence in various social media.


Researchers and Writers
We are always looking for people who are good at writing and researching.Do you have a topic about which you have conducted research? Would you like to share your findings? The Mt. Gretna Review is a peer reviewed journal which welcomes submissions of poems, short stories, historical narratives, book reviews, black and white drawings and photographs about Mt. Gretna and the surrounding region.
