December 2014

A Note from Cristin,

Sneaking in a short newsletter to close out 2014 at Sonoma Valley Teen Services.  I'm amazed at what we've accomplished this year, and beyond excited to see what 2015 has in store for us, especially the endless opportunities that await our teens.  Be on the lookout for an updated facade at the teen center, and the roll out of a new visual identity and name in 2015!

If you're a last minute holiday shopper like the rest of us, be sure to check out the information below about Operation Bicycle's bike sale tomorrow, December 13th at the Teen Center.

And if you're still looking for that perfect gift, consider a donation to our organization in the name of a friend or loved one.  We'd love to have your support to carry our mission to employ teens and empower dreams!

Happy holidays and wishing you much health and good fortune in the new year!

Reporting on "Ready to Work"

Skills for Work and Life 2014

Attentive students in a Ready to Work workshop.

"Ready to Work" is SVTS's work readiness workshops, on the job training and job placement services.

We have just completed our Fall 2014 session of our Ready To Work program, with facilitators Nancy Dome, CEO of Epoch Education and Osias Encarnacion, IT Manager for Kaiser Business.  The six-week series included Orientation, Employment 101, Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Money Management, Interview Techniques and Dress for Success and Mock Interviews.

We also held our first "What Employers Want" session in collaboration with The Sonoma Valley Economic Vitality Partnership and local businesses.  It was a successful question and answer panel with over 20 teens in attendance and a 30-minute Mocktail and the end of the session, where the teens had one-on-one conversations with all the employers.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, local businesses and community members who gave their valuable time and support to make this Fall sessions a huge success; North Bay Whole Foods, Whole Foods Sonoma, Sonoma/Glen Ellen Market, Umpqua Bank, WestAmerica Bank, Sonoma Fairmont Mission Inn, the girl and the fig, Bolt Staffing, Grandma Linda's Ice Cream, Dutch Bros. Coffee, SAY, Hanna Boys Center, Epoch Education, Laurie Decker and Rayne Dessayer.

Another successful series of workshops, and another graduating class of prepared teens, ready to enter the workforce!
LOVIN' OVEN: Mark Your Calendars for Bread Loaves!

We held our 3rd annual Holiday Pie Sale this past Thanksgiving, which was a huge success thanks to all our community support!  Our teens, alongside chef Rich Treglia, baked a total of 271 homemade pumpkin, apple crumb and pecan pies.  We would also like to say a special thanks to realtors Jacque Scott, Christine Benson and Tiffany Knef who purchased pies for their clients, to Whole Foods for their kind donation and to Rich Treglia for giving his time and expertise to help our teens experience a true culinary event!

We are getting ready to hold our 1st Holiday Bread Sale.  The Lovin Oven teens will be baking

Apple Cinnamon Nut, Persimmon and Banana Breads.  The will sell for $10.00 per one pound loaf.  You can call 707-939-1452 or email [email protected] to order.   You can pick up your order Tuesday, December 23rd  from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Sonoma Valley Teen Center located at 17440 Sonoma Hwy. Hurry and get your order in! Supplies are limited!!

And a special thank you is in order to Impact 100 for providing us with a grant to purchase and install a state-of-the-art commercial walk-in refrigerator, without which, we would not be able to turn out delectable offerings like pies and loaves, not mention our ever-popular chocolate chip cookies!
