WEEK 23 –BIG BROOKLYN RED/CHIDI

Big Brooklyn Red created quite a stir in the early 00’s with his ‘Foreword’ album and appearances on our Organic soul tour. He is now back and even better than before in his new album ‘Answer The Call’, one of the best New Soul albums so far this year. UK Soul singer Chidi also releases her second album which is also a step up and really good album.

New soul albums from Ryan Shaw featuring a great track ‘Evermore’ and Bobby Womack co produced by Damen Alban., both also available on Vinyl.

There are three really good Jazz albums this week from the ever reliable Brian Culbertson, Gerald Albright with Norman Brown and the funky sax player Shilts.

Good bunch of Reissues this week including Freddie Hubbard’s rare Japanese only album ‘Gleam’ , Mystic Merlin, Dells and two from Ronnie Foster.

There are some really good releases coming over the next couple of weeks including R Kelly, Princess Freesia and a couple of Horace Silver reissues on Soul Brother label. Princess Freesia will be launching her album at Soul Brother shop on 30th June with an in store signing between 1 - 3pm.

TOP ALBUMS OF THE WEEK - week ending 15th June 2012

BIG BROOKLYN RED - ANSWER THE CALL - CD - BBR - NEW - £14.99
Apollo winner Big Brooklyn Red is an incredible talent, his voice resonates Soulfulness, his style is contemporary but steeped in tradition. ‘Taking it too Far’ is a great upper mid tempo dancer based on Lowrell’s ‘Mellow mellow’ but taken to another level with punchy horn riffs. The uplifting ‘Answer The Call’, the uptempo version of ‘Sexual Healing’, ‘So Inspired’, ‘Home To You’  ‘Sunrays’ (ft Lady Alma) and mid tempo ‘Give You Up’ are all strong tracks. ‘Answer The Call’ has been a long time coming, originally scheduled for 2008, but it is well worth the wait. Very Strong album.

CHIDI - EXHALE - CD - STREET SOUL - NEW - £13.99 Chidi steps up a few gears to make a superb UK soul album in ‘Exhale’. ‘Someone’, ‘My Love Thang’, ‘I Want Love’ and ‘I Love it When We Talk’ are good soulful dancers. The pure vybe of ‘Girl Friend’ is captivating, and the 2 stepper ‘Heart Is Bleeding’ and mid tempo ‘Lay Your head’ are also highlights. Very Good Album

Brilliant album from Jazzanova recorded live in the Funkhaus studios with a seven piece band featuring the so soulful voice of Paul Randolph. On this album Jazzanova really do justice to their uptempo songs ‘Let me Show You’, ‘Look What You’re Doin To Me’ , ‘Let it Go’ and ‘I Can See’ which have that feel good factor. The mid tempo floaters ‘Lucky Girl’ and ‘No Use’ and the instrumentals ‘Theme From Belle Et Fou’ and ‘Fedtime’s Flight’ show the band at its tightest. This is great Soul music 2012 style but steeped in the tradition.
