Sundays December 11 and 18 from 5:30-6:45 Continues Drop-ins Welcome!
Cultivate your voice through Nada (sound-based) yoga in this rare 6-week series, "Raga Singing" with local Indian music maestro, Andrew McLean. The ancient Indian vocal system called SARGAM (Sa, Re, Ga... like the western "Do, Re, Mi...") is used throughout Indian folk and classical music and is the basis of all traditional instrumental music and dance. When we practice the ragas, we develop our core sense of self as well as a sense of union with that which is beyond the self. In the series, Andrew will guide participants through a collection of ragas in the classical style, and help each participant discover their own personal central note (Sa) to meditate upon.
Andrew McLean, a native of New Orleans, earned a B.A. in ethnomusicology from U.C.L.A. and has attended the Ali Akbar College of Music in both California and Calcutta where he has been receiving training from the legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. Back in New Orleans, Andrew has become the "first call" for Indian music in the region giving classes and performing regularly on a variety of instruments including tabla, sarode, sitar and his native guitar. His talents have been sought by such outstanding musicians as Ustad Aashish Khan, Henry Butler, Tony Dagradi, Michael Ray, Harold Brown, Jason Marsalis, Spyboy and Mardi Gras Indian Chiefs among others. Andrew McLean, andrumclean@gmail.com www.adorasound.com www.aacm.org. December 10 6 Times a Day Book Club with Keith at the Shala Learn an ancient way to keep track of your ethics called "the six times a day book". Nicknamed a "karma scavenger hunt", this simple and fun practice can shift your perspective on the daily routine, making the mundane into the magical. As Geshe Michael Roach says "Heaven is built on the small things." Practitioners who have stuck with the book for 3 months have said that their lives are completely changed for the better. To get started TODAY, please read this online reference written by close students of Geshe Michael Roach, which contains his teachings on the book: http://www.acidharma.org/aci/online/thebook.pdf For more details on the book: In ancient times, monks carried around pebbles in their pockets, some black and some white, to keep track of how they were doing throughout the day with ethical principals like: "protecting life", "speaking in ways that bring people together", "respecting other's relationships" and "being happy when others are happy". This way they could keep track of how many times per day they did things like, making sure a friend took their medicine or ate a good meal, vs. how many times they engaged in a little gossip, even though it seemed harmless at the time. At the end of the day, they would see how they did by counting how many black and how many white pebbles they had accumulated. In this way, they would have real evidence of how their practice was going. Knowing that karma is collected by how you treat others in the present, keeping track of ethics helps us be deeply honest about what we are doing to truly create a better world. It all starts with the small things; so we start with the book. No experience with yoga or with the 6 times a day book is needed. All are welcome.
