SCAEA Summer 2015 Newsletter

President's Palette

Summertime is the time for rest and rejuvenation. We have time for family, for the studio, or for just doing nothing.  If you're like me, you also spend time reflecting on the past school year and planning for 2015-16.

Reflection is so valuable as you build on effective instructional practices. Our successful units and lessons should be shared!  Plan to submit a workshop proposal (or a few) for our 2015 SCAEA State Conference.

Our Conference will be back in beautiful Beaufort from November 13 - 15, 2015. Our theme is Landscapes, and sessions will include plein air sessions, photography workshops, and so much more. Be a part of what makes our organization and our conference strong.  Submit your proposal today! The process is simple and takes just a few minutes.  All that is required to submit is:

Your name

NAEA member number

Workshop title

Brief workshop description

And basic workshop information

I want to take a moment here to recognize R. Scot Hockman has recently retired from his position as the Arts Associate for the South Carolina Department of Education.  His passion and expertise were influential in promoting and advancing arts education throughout his career.  In his 35 years of service to arts education as art teacher, advocate, and leader, Scot continuously worked for quality arts education for all South Carolina children.  His awards include the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award as well as numerous state, regional, and national awards.

Scot has served on the SCAEA board for many years including President.  SCAEA and all arts education associations have grown through his leadership and benefited from his persistent, successful efforts in securing support and funds, creating and implementing arts curricula and assessment, and in maintaining the role of the arts in the education of all of our students.  We cannot overstate the impact of Scot Hockman's leadership in arts education, or sincere gratitude to our arts champion and our friend.

High School Division Newsfrom Josh Keiper

On March 7th 2015, the Columbia Museum of Art hosted the National Art Honors Society state conference. As one of only a few states in the nation to host such an event, the conference was tremendously successful with 250+ registrants in attendance. Students attended sessions presented by university representatives as well as active SCAEA members ranging from monoprints with Gelli plates to figure drawing. The Nickelodeon's Sherard Duvall, presented a session on media literacy while docents from CMA led tours and presented lessons. The collaborative effort of the universities, colleges, The Nickelodeon, CMA and SCAEA has become a mainstay event during Youth Art Month.

Lower Region News from Elise Stuck

This past May, the Lower Region hosted an art retreat workshop in Charleston. Guest artist, Emily Miller, introduced a variety of fabric dyeing methods. Participants transformed their fabrics into an array of colorful canvases using immersion, stencil, and reverse dyeing.

Opportunities, Scholarships, Awards, Contests, You Name It, It's Right Here...

Where are the GREAT Art Teachers? They are out there and they need to be recognized!  Now is your chance. It is time to nominate the peers that inspire you (as well as your students, parents, and community) for an SCAEA Award!

There are many different categories. So, look for the one that compliments your nominee's strengths. Then, give them the lasting recognition they deserve for all their efforts!

You know art teachers that deserve an award (and administrators, too). Sacrifice as little as ten minutes of your lunch or weekend and show them you noticed. They will love you for it!

The nomination process is painless! We promise! The deadline for nominating is July 31st. See the 2015 Call for Nominations for the details. http://tinyurl.com/pk6c8fb

As well, we are offering scholarships for Arts Education majors...check out that, too  at http://tinyurl.com
