NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Conferences are coming up on Nov. 19th (3:30-7:30 pm) and 23rd (12-4pm) so it is time to consider how to make the most of the short time you have with teachers. In general, if you assume positive intentions, emphasize LEARNING over the grades, seek to understand this is a home-school collaboration and follow up if necessary after the conference, you will feel the conferences are worthwhile.

Possible questions you could ask your child's teachers :
  1. Find out how your child is performing in the class by asking questions like: Is my child consistently making an effort to engage in class, learn the material etc? Is my student a contributor to discussions? Does he or she ask questions? What do you see as his or her strengths? How could he or she improve?
  2. Be sure to share your thoughts and feelings about your child and what you know from past experience about them as a student.. Explain what he or she needs more help with.
  3. Let the teacher know how you support learning at home. Ask what you can do at home to help your child learn.
  4. Find out what services are available at the school to help your child. Ask how the teacher will both challenge your child and support your child when he or she needs it.

After the conference how should you follow up?
  1. Make a plan.
  2. Communication should go both ways. Ask how you can contact the teacher. And don't forget to ask how the teacher will contact you too. There are many ways to communicate-in person, by phone, notes, email. Make a plan that works for both of you.
  3. Talk to your child. The parent-teacher conference is all about your child, so don't forget to include him or her following the conference. They aren't required to attend this one. Share with your child what you learned. Show him or her how you will help with learning at home. Ask for his or her suggestions." For more resources on family involvement, visit www.hfrp.org.

Defining Family Engagement:
Research demonstrates that family engagement is a dynamic, interactive process that provides a pathway to student success. In particular, family engagement is:
1. A shared responsibility among families, community organizations, and schools.
2. Continuous throughout a child's life, from birth through adolescence.
3. Occurring across the multiple settings and contexts in which children grow and learn.

Countless Edina students provide volunteer service hours in and around our community every year.   This practice speaks very well of our students and the support they receive from their families toward promoting the common good.  One of our roles in public education is to develop citizenship in our students.  We should be very proud of the work being done by so many of our students.
In addition to all the other reasons why Community Service is valuable, Edina Public Schools' students in grades 9-12 can letter in community service . The community service letter is an award earned by students who go above and beyond when it comes to serving others.

Announcements

Phone Use
Please have a conversation with your child reminding them that phones are not allowed bell to bell during the school day.Our policy is to have the phones be put in the main office and a parent must come to pick it up. Most teachers redirect students the first couple times, but then send them to the office. There is no educational value of phones in the classroom at this time.

Conferences
This fall's conference is arena style. Logistically, with over 1300 students in our building, that means that each conference can not be any longer than 5 minutes. So how can you make this a valuable time? Here are some thoughts to consider:

  1. The point of a conference is not to display the student's current averaged grade, point out missing assignments or contrive ways to achieve/maintain a particular grade. There are better ways to keep track of grades--which should largely be the student's responsibility by middle school, anyway. If the only reason we hold conferences is to talk about grades, then we are complicit in elevating grades over learning.  You can look at the grades on SchoolView. Ask questions that help you understand your child as a learner in a particular classroom. It may differ from class to class.

  1. Conferences are an opportunity for two-way communication.    Conferences are   a place for parents to tell teachers things about their child : How he likes to learn. What she says about the class at home. How he enjoys spending free time. What she says about other students in the class. After a good conference, both the parent and teacher know more about how things could be better. Ask the teacher how he or she sees your student contributing in class, persisting to learn, asking questions, etc. Ask your student to help you develop some questions for the conference.

Winter MAP Testing (Dec. 7-11)

You can help your child have a positive experience on these assessments by:
  • Seeing that your child is well rested during the testing period.
  • Making sure your child has a good breakfast every day, especially on testing days.
  • Not scheduling appointments that would take your child out of school on testing days!
  • Helping your child to be confident.  Let him/her know that you know that he/she will do his/her best and that no one is expected to get every answer correct.
  • Being sure he/she has the appropriate equipment; i.e., several No.2 pencils that are not too sharp, a good separate eraser and comfortable clothing.
  • Keeping your child out of school if he/she is truly ill during the testing period.
If you have questions regarding these upcoming assessments, please contact me at 952-848-4446 or [email protected].  Thank you!
