History & Heritage
Southern Delaware has as many museums as it does miles of Atlantic shoreline (26 to be precise!)
Their dynamic exhibits bring the area's history to life with stories of shipwrecks, pirates and their booty, storms, political intrigue, and tales of early life here. Want to learn more?  Click here...

Sampling of Current Exhibits

The Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes is currently exhibiting "Rose Color to Gold to Glowing Red: Orville and Ethel Peets in Paris 1913-1914." The exhibit features 15 paintings - eight works by Orville Houghton Peets (1884-1968) and seven works by his wife Ethel Canby Peets (1877-1955). Also displayed are an assemblage of painting materials used by the noted Delaware artists including paint brushes and palettes. Exhibit through December 2017.

Public Improvements, an exhibit focused on the development of Milford's Police Department and Water & Light Commission, transportation, and early surveying of the town will be at the Milford Museum, 121 S. Walnut Street, until November 18, 2017.

Discovering Delaware's Maritime Past display at Zwaanendael Museum explores the DeBraak, a shipwrecked 18th-century British warship including a photo of the hull recovery, reproductions of items aboard ship, and a model of the vessel.

A Seaborne Citizenry: The DeBraak and Its Atlantic World Exhibit at Zwaanendael Museum utilizes artifacts recovered from His Majesty's Sloop of War DeBraak, a British warship that sank off the Delaware coast on May 25, 1798 to tell the story of the vessel, its crew and the historical context within which it operated in the Atlantic World of the late 18th century.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum exhibit, "Angry Waters" chronicles the impact of storms on the beach area, telling the story of famous shipwrecks, and demonstrating how the community responded with lighthouses, lifesaving stations, and rebuilding efforts. Through March, 2018.

Culinary Coast™ Recipe

Easy Lavender Lemonade or Limeade

Marie Mayor

Marie's favorite recipe for Lavender Lemonade comes from "The Art of Cooking with Lavender" by Nancy Baggett. Nancy has conducted culinary demonstrations at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, at Lavender Fields at Warrington Manor and at lavender farms throughout the United States. The cookbook is available Amazon.com.

Easy Lavender Limeade or Lemonade

½ c water
1 tablespoon chopped fresh culinary lavender spikes (bloom heads) or dried culinary lavender buds
3 to 4 cups ice cubes, plus more if needed
1 12-ounce can frozen limeade concentrate or lemonade concentrate
5 or 6 lime or lemon slices or wedges for garnish
5 or 6 fresh lavender sprigs for garnish, optional.

Bring the water just to a boil in a nonreactive container. Stir in the lavender, mashing it against the container sides several times. Set aside to steep for 10 to 15 minutes.

Just before serving, in a large pitcher, stir together the ice cubes, frozen limeade or lemonade concentrate, and 3 cans cold water (measured using the juice can.) Strain the steeped lavender through a fine mesh sieve into the pitcher, pressing down with a spoon to extract as much water as possible. Stir well, adding more ice cubes as needed. Garnish with lime or lemon slices and lavender sprigs (if available). Makes 1 ½ quarts, about 6 (9-ounce) servings.

Marie Mayor has been a business owner in Sussex County for 15 years and an Education Administrator for more than 40 years. She is the co-Owner with Sharon Harris of Lavender Fields at Warrington Manor, a five acre lavender and flower farm in Milton, and is the Delaware recipient of the US Small Business Administration 2012 Women Business Champions and former President of the Delaware Agritourism Association. She is a Master Gardener with the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension Service and a frequent speaker on establishing a successful small agriculture-related business.
