An Interview with Patti Vickman

What does your business do and for how long?

The Southern Door County School District began in March of 1960 when consolidation of 26 separate districts in the Southern Door area was approved by the voters and a board of education was elected in April of that year. This public school district has provided educational opportunities for the students living in our community for over fifty years and currently educates 1,175 children in grades Pre K-12.

Southern Door County Schools are located on a beautiful 129 acre site just off Highway 57, six miles north of Brussels and seven miles south of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.  In addition to the elementary, middle, and high schools on the site are numerous athletic fields, a school forest, a schoolyard garden, an old-time one-room schoolhouse, community walking trail, and large playground areas. The district is known for its strong traditions of academic and co-curricular excellence, "family" like atmosphere, numerous volunteer and service learning projects and community partnerships.

How many people do you employ?

We employ 154 fulltime and 16 part-time staff which includes administrators, associates, bus drivers, coaches, custodians, district office staff, maintenance personnel, secretaries, and teachers. In addition to staff, the school benefits from numerous parent, business, and community volunteers.

What makes your business special in Southern Door?

We have the awesome privilege of working with parents and community as partners to educate the children of Southern Door, help them realize their full potential, and prepare them for their future as citizens of the world.

What one place or event in Southern Door do you love or that stands out for you?

Schools are often said to be the gathering point in a community. At Southern Door, the auditorium is the place where our community comes together to celebrate its proud traditions. From the fifth grade and high school musicals to athletic and academic awards nights, from concerts and plays to special programs and ceremonies, from 8th grade send-off to high school graduation, there is nothing more spectacular than our families, friends, neighbors, and relatives all coming together to celebrate our youth and our community.

What's a famous quote or piece of advice you would like to share with others?

We thank the Southern Door community for their continued support of our students and their educational opportunities. They are our future and we need to help them attain their personal hopes and dreams.  Your time, your talent, and your treasure have ensured that a great education is provided for so many generations of children.  Thank you for entrusting our staff to work side by side with you to provide the best education possible for the Southern Door children of today and tomorrow!

An Interview with Jim & Jill Kavicky

What does your business do and for how long?

Started in Sturgeon Bay in 1969, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ has expanded to over 80 parks across the U.S. and Canada, and has become a franchise network of campgrounds focused on providing meaningful and memorable family vacations. In fact, Yogi Bear™ invites you to camp at our park - Where You Camp with Friends®! We provide indoor and outdoor activities for your whole family, from sports & swimming to games & the Yogi Bear Theater. The Kavicky Family has owned and operated the park since January 2002.

How many people do you employ?

We operate seasonally from about 2 employees in late spring and fall to a peak of about 20 during the summer. Folks work in our Ranger Station, Goodie Shop, and our Rangers maintain our facilities and coordinate our planned activities.

What makes your business special in Southern Door?

Considering that the concept for the park started with folks located in Sturgeon Bay and nearby Two Rivers, means that there are plenty of local folks who put their heart and sweat into the establishment. Now, more than 45 years later, Jellystone Park remains a dedicated business to visiting families and the community, by donating funds to local Door County charities obtained from its Kid's Carnival Weekend in August.

What one place or event in Southern Door do you love or stands out for you?

Really?!! Just one??!!! Orchards, farms, beautiful scenery, welcoming business owners, and a community of folks who love people - how's that for one?

What's a favorite quote or a piece of advice you would like to share with others?

As our own Yogi Bear™ says, "Hey, hey, hey! I'm smarter than the average bear!"
