BlueWaveNJ and the Montclair Film Festival proudly present...

The 2015 Montclair Film Festival is almost here!   Opening Night is t his Friday, May 1. The Festival continues through Sunday May 10.

BlueWaveNJ is proud to be a participant in the Festival for the fifth year in a row.  This year we are pleased to co-present three important documentary films that each illuminate vital issues of human rights and social justice. Each film profiles a courageous  individual or individuals as they bravely confront complex questions about identity, culture or belief - in the process gaining a better understanding of  their own  humanity, as well as their adversaries'.  All are  timely, provocative and moving.

Two of our co-presented films spotlight women directors, and one,  Out in the Night,  is homegrown and filmed right here in NJ. Please find descriptions for all 2015 BWNJ co-sponsored films - including  Peace Officer and The Armor of Light - below.

Film can provide insight into and compassion for the human experience.  A goal of BlueWaveNJ is to turn compassion into action through progressive initiatives, advocacy and education.  We hope you will support the Montclair Film Festival and these important films in doing that. Join us as we continue our work on these topics.

The BlueWaveNJ co-presented films for 2015 are:

OUT IN THE NIGHT

On August 18, 2006, four friends out for a night on the town in the West Village,  gay-friendly neighborhood, had their lives changed forever by a 9-minute encounter. OUT IN THE NIGHT tells the story of four black gay women from Newark who were assaulted by a homophobic man and then jailed for defending themselves. Director Blair Dorosh-Walther  skillfully weaves together a film that looks at the interplay of race, sexuality, and gender expression in criminal justice.

THE ARMOR OF LIGHT

Faith, firearms and one minister's journey.  Reverend Rob Schenck is a man who likes certainty. So as a lifelong pro-life and gun rights advocate, he underwent a crisis of conviction when he began to question how his stance on gun rights could be consistent with his pro- life beliefs. Schenck's questioning conscience is forever changed by his encounter with Lucy McBath, herself a Christian gun control activist after the shooting death of her son, Jordan Davis, in Florida.   Director Abigail Disney presents a portrait of a man and an issue that you won't soon forget. THE ARMOR OF LIGHT depicts candid self-reflection, courage of character, and unexpected alliances in a way that fosters hope for change.    In person: director Abigail Disney - May 9th only

PEACE OFFICER

Former Sheriff, Dub Lawrence, founded Utah's SWAT Team only to find himself at odds with the same division 30 years later after his son-in-law was gunned down in a tragic encounter with the team. Dub's single-minded quest to uncover what went wrong on that fateful day exposes a larger issue in American law enforcement: the increased militarization of the Police.  While set in Utah, filmmakers  Scott Christopherson and Brad Barber turn a critical eye on the nationwide issue of officer-involved shootings.    In person:  director Scott Christopherson
