Graduation for Students with IEPs

by Lauren O'Connell Mahler, Esq.
The end of the school year is quickly approaching.  For parents of students with disabilities, the end of another school year often brings thoughts of the path to graduation.  You may be asking yourself, "How do I know if/when my child is ready to graduate?",  "Who decides whether my child graduates or stays in school until age 21?,"  and "Should my child earn a standard diploma or a non-diploma alternative?"

TEEN MOM MEETS TITLE IX:
Legal Protection and Services for Pregnant and Parenting Students in Public Schools

by Jessica Nguyen, Esq.
According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, the United States has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births among Western industrialized countries. Not only does teenage parenthood cause detrimental consequences on the teen parents' educational success and future economic security, these effects carry over to their children, creating a multigenerational problem. According to well-documented studies, teen mothers are more likely than other young people to drop out of school, live in poverty, and rely on public assistance. Moreover, students who drop out of school are more likely to earn lower lifetime income, experience worse overall health, and are more likely to see their own children drop out of school and suffer the same consequences. Therefore, it is crucial for pregnant and parenting students and their families to push schools to provide appropriate services and accommodations to allow these students to access and continue their education.

Ahhh...spring is in the air! Many parents and kids are thinking of summer and all of the fun things to do during break.  For students, the last thing on their minds is going back to school in the fall.  In fact, children often dread returning to school.  For parents, however, now is prime time to be thinking of next school year, especially parents of children transitioning to a new school or building.  Often, parents think that they need to wait until the beginning of the next school year to meet new teachers, visit classrooms, and address changes to their child's program.  Parents can make the transition to a new school year a smoother process by following these tips:

Members of MLO Run Broad Street & Contribute to Charity of Choice
Dennis McAndrews, Esq., Allyson McAndrews, M.Ed., Tanya Alvarado, Esq. & Emma Ungar of MLO

Three members of McAndrews Law Offices recently completed the 10 mile Broad Street run. In recognition of these efforts of Tanya Alvarado, Allyson McAndrews, and Dennis McAndrews, MLO is contributing $100 to each runner's designated charities. Tanya has designated Literacy for Incarcerated Teens as her charity, Ally has designated the Clery Center for Campus Security as her charity, and Dennis has designated Mothers' Home as his charity. It was a great event, and MLO is honored to have been a part of it!
