HOT DOCS TO PAY TRIBUTE TO WMM
FILMMAKER MAYA GALLUS WITH RETROSPECTIVE!
We are super excited to share the news that
Hot Docs will pay tribute to director and producer Maya Gallus with this year's Focus On Retrospective. This is an annual program that showcases the work of a mid-career Canadian filmmaker. The Festival will screen a selection of Gallus' films from April 27 to May 7, 2017.
Maya Gallus is an award-winning filmmaker whose work has screened around the world. WMM is proud to distribute 3 of her films, GIRL INSIDE, an intimate, early transgender story, for which she won the Gemini Award for Best Direction

DISH-WOMEN, WAITRESSING & THE ART OF SERVICE, a portrait of working women in the service industry, from North American diners to Japanese fantasy maid cafes; and DERBY CRAZY LOVE which takes viewers inside the adrenaline-fueled phenomenon of women's roller derby. Congratulations to Maya on this much deserved retrospective of her work!

How to Oscar-qualify your film in NYC with Erika Dilday of the Maysles Documentary Center & Jake Perlin of the Metrograph Cinema
Erika Dilday and Jake Perlin will discuss how to work with them to qualify your film for an Academy Award, how much it costs and when you should start planning. They will also talk about how to submit your film to their programming lineups throughout the year.

Thom Powers, Documentary Programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival and Artistic Director for DOC NYC, will join us to answer your questions about what these prestigious festivals are looking for and what you should know before submitting. The deadline to submit to TIFF is June 2nd so this is a great opportunity to get the inside scoop on making your film stand out!

WMM RECEIVES FILMCRAFT GRANT FROM
Women Make Movies' is honored to have been awarded
a FilmCraft Grant from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for our highly regarded Production Assistance Program which supports emerging and established filmmakers. This grant was established to identify and empower future filmmakers from nontraditional backgrounds, cultivate new and diverse talent, promote motion pictures as an art form, and provide a platform for underrepresented artists. We are pleased to be among the prestigious organizations receiving awards this year and congratulation them all.

WMM EXPANDS ITS PA PROGRAM TO INCLUDE TV WITH 48 HOURS EPISODE
"THE FAMILY" AIRING THIS SATURDAY ON CBS
Tune into CBS's 48 Hours this weekend and watch THE FAMILY! As part of our commitment to supporting women filmmakers, WMM's Production Assistance Program has expanded to include pre-sale, co-production and other broadcast opportunities for selected projects. Our first successful collaboration is a licensing agreement between the national broadcaster CBS and the award winning directing/producing team Rosie Jones and Anna Grieve to bring the story of Anne Hamilton-Byrne and her notorious cult "The Family" to US audiences. PA Program Director Barbara Ghammashi, negotiated the deal for this Saturday's episode of the award winning series, entitled THE FAMILY.
WMM is proud of Ghammashi's involvement and Executive Producer credit for this powerful story showing in prime time across the US.

JANE: AN ABORTION SERVICE, f
ollowed by a conversation with Laura Kaplan, the
author of
The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service
,
and the journalist Madeleine Schwartz. The screening will take place at the Anthology Film Archives on April 30th at 2:30pm.
JANE: AN ABORTION SERVICE follows the activities of a Chicago-based women's health collective, members of which performed-without formal medical training-nearly 12,000 safe illegal abortions between 1969 and 1973. For more information about the screening click here.
