FROM THE HEART
SPECIAL PUBLIC SAFETY EDITION

LCA's Mission: To Inspire People to Join Together for the Social, Cultural, and Physical Enrichment of Our Neighborhood.
June 4, 2018

Dear Neighbors:

The safety and security of our neighborhood and surrounding ones is of paramount importance to Lincoln Central Association and we know the same is true of the other neighborhood organizations in Lincoln Park. Ultimately, safety is about understanding, being alert to and managing risk. For that reason, Lincoln Central is working with leading partners to bring more safety programs and education into the community.

Much like our neighborhood itself, safety has many dimensions and there is something for everyone. Just last weekend at Spring Zing, Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago,   ADT Home Custom Home Services, as well as the neighborhood heroes from the Armitage Firehouse, provided valuable information on keeping our neighborhood and its residents safe. It was clear from  lines that formed at these stations that learning more about safety and security is a priority for neighborhood families.

With safety on everyone's mind, the most important thing we can do is work together. After all, we are blessed to live in an amazing neighborhood. Each one of us can help keep it that way. We are committed to working together with you and our partners to help keep our neighborhood as safe as it can be. It starts with communication. Please share your concerns on public safety at any time by contacting me directly (775.531.5515 or kenneth@chicago.com) or by emailing us at communityaffairs@lincolncentral.orgWe'll keep you informed and share information with you as it comes available.

From the heart,

Kenneth Dotson, LCA President

P. S. Support from Geja's Cafe helps LCA continue our work in the neighborhood including events, like Saturday's, that provide both entertainment and education to the neighborhood families. WANT TO LEARN SELF DEFENSE TECHNIQUES?
LCA Can Help

Lakeshore's Troy Stephens
teaching self-defense at Spring Zing.
With the increasing concern about safety and security, LCA partnered with our friends at  LCA member  Lakeshore Sport & Fitness to bring a children's self-defense class to Spring Zing for the first time. Lakeshore's defense instructor, Troy Stephens, was instructional, inspiring and connected to the kids.

Lakeshore's advice to kids is direct: if a stranger approaches you 1) run away and 2) if you can't run away, kick, push and yell for help. Lakeshore provides hands-on, supervised opportunities for kids to experiment with techniques - all in an upbeat music environment that makes it accessible and fun.

Troy had the children's full attention.
If there is sufficient interest, Lincoln Central will partner again with Lakeshore Sports & Fitness to bring additional safety classes into our  neighborhood here in our area parks.

LCA BRINGS BIKE SAFETY CLASSES TO SPRING ZING
Sponsored by the Community Volunteer Corps from  Lurie Children's Hospital

The Community Volunteer Corps from Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago
returned to Spring Zing for the fourth consecutive year to provide bike and pedestrian safety lessons for children and families.

The Community Volunteer Corps is a partnership between Lurie Children's Hospital and Kohl's Cares for Kids, the philanthropic arm of Kohl's Department Stores.

Kids were lined up to speak to Lurie Children's Community Volunteer Corps about bike safety at Spring Zing. Lurie's had bike helmets on hand but more importantly they had no nonsense advice: helmets only work if you wear them. They also shared Lurie's 2-V-1 guide to the perfect fit which you can read about here if you missed it.

Lurie's, together with Kohl's Cares, gave out flexible reflectors for both the wrist and ankles that residents can use to increase visibility.
