Hello!
Just so happens that, one day after we featured Maldonado Chardonnay 2009 in our last newsletter, Wine Spectator Insider came out with an equally glowing review. Jim Laube wrote, "Pure, rich and deep, dense and focused, with nectarine, honeysuckle, fig and citrus, gaining depth and dimension on the finish, where the flavors linger. Drink now through 2020." We wrote, "full-flavored and rich with classic 'broad-shouldered' Chardonnay flavors of poached pear, caramel, apple pie and brown butter flavors. It's a textural pleasure as it rests on your tongue like baked meringue." Must admit it feels good to be just a hair ahead of the press. Yes, we think we know what we're doing here.
This is a good lead-in to today's "Special Delivery." Three years ago, Jeff Ames poured us his 2007 Rudius Napa Cabernet and we bought it on the spot. Days later, the wine got a glorious Spectator review. Back Room was one of the few merchants to have that 2007 and the demand went through the roof. To this day we are still one of the few places you can buy Rudius. We brought in the 2009 Rudius Cabernet Sauvignon late last year and sold all we got. In the "doesn't hurt to ask" category, we asked Jeff if he was interested in being a "Special Delivery" winemaker...but if so, we'd need more wine. Well, I guess you know what his answer was. Check it out below.
This Thursday's tasting features wines from unlikely sources, including Arizona.
We call it "Wines from WHERE?" Only ten bucks for this one. Full line-up here.
Friday night's tasting is a regional one, and we are highlighting the very diverse
Central Coast of California. We'll pour you two refreshing whites, three different reds
and something a little sweet for dessert. $15/tasting. Click here for the details.
And don't forget Sunday Happy Hour!
It's the bargain of the week in the wine bar - ten dollars for three exceptional wines.
This week: Mosel Valley Riesling: Kabinett, Spatlese and Auslese. Details here.
