SPECIAL DELIVERY
RUDIUS Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
from winemaker JEFF AMES

May 9, 2012

Hello!

Just so happens that, one day after we featured Maldonado Chardonnay 2009 in our last newsletter, Wine Spectator Insider came out with an equally glowing review.
Jim Laube wrote,
"Pure, rich and deep, dense and focused, with nectarine, honeysuckle, fig and citrus, gaining depth and dimension on the finish, where the flavors linger. Drink now through 2020."  We wrote, "full-flavored and rich with classic 'broad-shouldered' Chardonnay flavors of poached pear, caramel, apple pie and brown butter flavors. It's a textural pleasure as it rests on your tongue like baked meringue." Must admit it feels good to be just a hair ahead of the press. Yes, we think we know what we're doing here.

This is a good lead-in to today's "Special Delivery."
Jeff AmesThree years ago, Jeff Ames poured us his 2007 Rudius Napa Cabernet and we bought it on the spot. Days later, the wine got a glorious Spectator review. Back Room was one of the few merchants to have that 2007 and the demand went through the roof. To this day we are still one of the few places you can buy Rudius. We brought in the 2009 Rudius Cabernet Sauvignon late last year and sold all we got. In the "doesn't hurt to ask" category, we asked Jeff if he was interested in being a "Special Delivery" winemaker...but if so, we'd need more wine. Well, I guess you know what his answer was.
Check it out below.

This Thursday's tasting features wines from unlikely sources, including Arizona.

We call it "Wines from WHERE?" Only ten bucks for this one. Full line-up here.

Friday night's tasting is a regional one, and we are highlighting the very diverse

Central Coast of California. We'll pour you two refreshing whites, three different reds

and something a little sweet for dessert. $15/tasting. Click here for the details.

And don't forget Sunday Happy Hour!

It's the bargain of the week in the wine bar - ten dollars for three exceptional wines.

This week: Mosel Valley Riesling: Kabinett, Spatlese and Auslese. Details here.

Jim Laube always says Chardonnay tastes like figs.  Chris & Dan
"Special Delivery" Wine
RUDIUS Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009
Jeff Ames - Rudius
Jeff Ames signs a case of
2009 Rudius Cabernet.
$65/bottle, Six Pack: $390 Net Priced

Six pack includes one bottle signed, dated and numbered by owner/winemaker Jeff Ames.
There are only TWELVE limited edition packs available.

Our tasting notes: The fruit comes from Oakville and St. Helena. Includes 4% Cabernet Franc. High % of new French oak. Exotic, floral, spic aromas take some coaxing to come out. 15 minutes of air reveals the wine's red fruits, sweet oak, malt and tobacco. With more air the wine's cherry liqueur, dark chocolate and allspice smells & flavors emerge. Drinking real nice now with a 60 minute decanting. Cellar for 3-5 years and be rewarded.

We're very happy to have the opportunity to sell you this wine. Thank you Jeff!

Flowers or Wine?
Mother's Day is this Sunday. Are you getting your mom flowers or wine? Both?

If wine's your thing (well, her's I guess), might I suggest this perfect brunch wine:

Gatti Piero Brachetto 2011

Brachetto is the grape. This is traditional, artisan Brachetto from Piedmont, Italy. Light red, fizzy, full of plums, strawberries and spice, off-dry, low alcohol, refreshing and wonderful. This is a perfect wine for moms everywhere.
Only $19/bottle, so get her a few!
