Your participation needed (especially youth and those adults who have brought young people to a Cafe Cultura open mic, workshop, and/or event)
We invite you to participate in continuing to build a Cafe Cultura that is responsive to the needs and wishes of our communities. There are 2 ways we are asking you to do this.
1) Community Survey: Please complete the short Cafe Cultura community survey located at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/cafecultura2012 by tonight (Mon, May 14th). If for some reason you can't, the survey will remain open....but we would encourage you to fill it out ASAP so we can review the survey results.
2) Cafe Cultura Collective meeting: If you want to be more involved in organizing Cafe Cultura, we invite you to attend the Cafe Cultura Collective meeting on Sunday, May 20th @ 1pm at Tocabe (44th ave & Lowell blvd).
Less than a week to support young people in our workshops tell their stories...

Running for Creative Expression
Supporters of Cafe Cultura will be running in the Colfax Marathon on May 20, 2012 to fundraise for our increased work in the community...specifically to conduct more spoken word workshops for youth and publish their work.
Alejandro Jimenez, Hannabah Blue, Derek Brown, Jozer, Ara Cruz, Olivia Martinez, & Kasi Garcia will run in the half-marathon (13.1 miles).
Click on the link to help fund our workshops and support young people in telling their stories (feel free to choose which runner you're supporting). We're also promoting healthy living through running (a strong tradition in Native communities...North & South...that goes back centuries)

|-We placed an order for Cafe Cultura t-shirts. We will have them ready by this Friday...just in time to run in the Colfax Marathon. They will be very similar to the ones we made a couple years back: our logo on the front, Cafe Cultura on the bottom back, and the phrase "Our culture heals us" in Nahuatl, Dine', Lakota, Spanish, & English. It will be a turquoise print on gray shirts (made in US...sweatshop free).
-We will be vending at the 2nd Annual DU New Beginnings Spring Pow Wow this Saturday, May 19th (Grand Entry @ 3pm).
-We were asked to table at Girls Recognizing Outstanding Women (GROW)
on May 19th to make connections with girls ages 10-15 (see http://grow.bbnow.org
for more info).
-We need your help
: We're still distributing Cafe Cultura Collective Compilation books to local schools and organizations
working with youth (especially to those serving mostly Native & Chican@/Raza youth) free of charge. If you're interested or know of contacts, send us an email (firstname.lastname@example.org
). We'd definitely appreciate it...
-Website!!!: We are excited to have an incredible website soon (www.cafecultura.org

Workshops for Youth
We are coming to the end of our workshops with youth at KIPP Denver Collegiate High School and The Bridge Project @ Quigg Newton. Here is a sample of what they've produced:
"My mother is everything to me.
She raised me and my brother by herself.
Believe me, it's hard.
She held me carefully with her strength and love.
When my mother makes me scrambled eggs,
it feels like she feeds the whole world." -Jean (age: 13)
We are publishing chapbooks from each group and would appreciate your financial support (see info on the Colfax Marathon).
Make sure to read future newsletters for more updates from our workshops...
