OT Corner
Changing of the Seasons
Leah Logan, M.S., OTR

Spring time is just around the corner. With each change of the season, it is not uncommon for me to have to adjust the goals that I am working on with a client, or at least adjust how I am an addressing a specific goal. Winter months typically mean working on donning coats, engaging zippers on coats, donning long-sleeved shirts and donning winter apparel accessories (hats, mittens, gloves, etc.) These are all skills that I don't often directly address during warmer months because they aren't applicable. Not only do clients not wear their coats to BACA during the summer, but it would not be in a natural context to put on a winter coat when it is 80° outside. Warmer months typically mean donning short-sleeved shirts and tank tops, safely maneuvering on playground equipment and bike riding. It's obviously easier and more convenient for everyone to work on outside activities when it isn't freezing outside. Shoe tying is an activity that can go one way or the other in regards to the seasons. I have had some kiddos who wear only sandals during the summer and I have had some clients who only wear fleece-lined crocs during the winter. Neither of these types of shoes are conducive to teaching shoe tying, so depending on the client and the type of shoe he or she typically wears during a specific time of the year, I may only work on shoe tying for just a portion of the year. While this issue of the changing seasons is not specific to being an OT at BACA, I feel like most pediatric OT's don't work with their clients across the entire calendar year.
