SPICE
Up Your
HEALTH!

Science has found that many everyday spices have
more disease-fighting antioxidants than most fruits & vegetables... So if you don't already use the spices listed below, consider adding them to a few meals this week!  Seasoning your food with spices will add tons of flavor with adding extra calories and give you a major
health boost at the same!

CUMIN will keep you sharp!  A       lab study shows cumin's anti-
  inflammatory properties may
  improve memory & lower stress.

*Blend it with hummus or toss it with pumpkin seeds before roasting*

CRUSHED RED PEPPER
can help you trim down!  Its
metabolism-boosting properties
come from the capsaicin in the chiles.  Plus, a study found women who added 2 teaspoons of the spice
to their food took in fewer
calories & fat in later meals.

*Stir into grilled vegetables, guacamole & pasta*

CLOVES calm your tummy! A compound in ground cloves, eugenol, may soothe your stomach.

*Try a pinch in applesauce or tea*

GINGER helps with muscle pain!
It contains gingerol, which is
a natural anti-inflammatory
that research finds may reduce
next-day muscle pain.

*Blend into your favorite post-workout shake*

CINNAMON keeps bones strong!  It provides manganese,
mineral that helps maintain
bone density. It can also help regulate blood sugar!

*Shake it into coffee and onto apples & oatmeal*

Blackened
Cumin-Cayenne Tilapia

This is the perfect dish to highlight cumin because
it's so easy and fast (both to prepare and to cook),
it's super healthy, and tilapia is one of the few fishes that you can count on to regularly be affordable at the store!

INGREDIENTS (4 Servings):
  • 4 (6-ounce) tilapia fillets
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Cooking spray

Preheat broiler.  (Using the broiler makes the already quick-cooking Tilapia cook even faster!)

Rub oil evenly over fish.  Combine cumin, salt, garlic powder and peppers in a bowl and sprinkle over fish. Arrange fish on a broiler pan coated with cooking spray.

Broil for about 7 - 10 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork or desired degree of doneness.

Heat the olive oil over medium heat.  Drop the batter into a skillet, spread into 1/2" thick pancakes.  Cook, turning once, until the pancakes are golden brown on each side.
