A PERSONAL NOTE
Hi,
December sure was a "bumpy" month, felt personally, nationally, and globally. While it contained the holiday spirits of Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's, along with their respective parties, gift-giving, card-sending-and-receiving, and messages of caring, spirituality, and rejuvenation, it also held residual election woes and anger, terrorist horrors, loss of beloved entertainers, and generalized stress and anxiety.
Personally, besides some fairly minor health stuff (and their concomitant
endless doctors' visits!), we did okay, but it was heartbreaking to hear about or see online what some friends and neighbors were going through. If it were up to me, I'd like to see everyone happy and hopeful, and feeling (as a reader does) that we "dodged a HUGE bullet".
Our country struggles with several intense patterns of energy. Neptune square our Ascendant is perpetuating the miasma of distrust, deception, and lack of cohesion; Pluto square progressed Mars is bringing intense rage if not violence to the surface; and Saturn square our Neptune is causing disillusionment and "the end of hope". These patterns are in effect all through 2017.
In my newest article, I wrote about the positives that will be made to happen in the new year, 2017. I still believe in good changes such as economic transformation, a new love for country, the protection of its laws, and maybe a healing within its population. But although this and more will be possible, it will not obliterate the dark forces at work. Not until the clear truth is shown, accepted, processed, and resolved can we be as one nation, no less one race.
But if we can realize that forces of light are battling with forces of darkness in our daily lives and in our playing of the wisdom game, the shift will come.

JAN. 2017 ASTRO TIDBITS
In the world chart, the economy should prosper all month (
Jupiter sextile Saturn
), although there is lethargy at the beginning (
Neptune conjunct Mars
). The 8th sees discussions moving forward (
Mercury station direct
). Intense feelings and emotional highs and lows arise between the 11th - 12th (
Mars sextile Pluto; Full Moon square Jupiter, quinqunx Saturn
). Idealism prevails on the 13th (
Neptune conjunct Venus
). The 19th brings setbacks and peak resentments (
Mars square Saturn
) but also new values (
Venus sextile Pluto
). The 28th favors humanitarian and innovative efforts (

The general prospects for our nation in 2017 are mostly favorable: we'll see positive transformation (

A lot of people, from the looks of it on Facebook and other sites, are feeling many negative emotions seemingly from the fallout of our electional process - emotions such as anxiety, anger, or gloom. (Many other people are feeling elation, some even gloating.) But if emotions are the thing that is getting you down, surely this is the right time to stop and consider whether your conscious logical mind is running the show or whether you are helpless in the face of your overwhelming feelings. And if you decide, upon consideration, to take charge and get yourself into a better place, it may be helpful to remember how to do so.
Recently, I found myself in a place of anger, confusion and some depression, and even though I could see these patterns activated in my horoscope, nevertheless I still felt them, and felt somewhat impotent regarding these moods and irritants. This is the point at which one must remember the techniques - whatever works - to switch primarily one's thoughts, because the thoughts are often the catalyst for the onset of a slew of negative emotions. And if the thoughts change, so will these troubling feelings.
How do you switch thoughts?
First of all, you have to recognize them. This may require you to have a bit of a conversation with yourself - even a debate. Why are you feeling this way? What has provoked you? Is it accurate? Do you need to dwell in it? Is a certain thought or thoughts the cause of the onslaught of a negative emotion? So, the identification of what is bugging you, what you are chewing on, might be the first step.
Next is obvious. It is the recognition that it feels lousy to be in this state. Well, that's why we're doing this in the first place because anxiety, confusion, anger, irritation, depression, and so forth don't feel good!
The third stage is where the inner work takes place, and this is the conscious choice to switch the thought. It is the decision when you recognize that you are looping, or repeating endlessly that which is disturbing your serenity. How to make the switch? You can move yourself to a brighter thought. This is not easy at first but gets better and smoother with practice. You can reframe your storyline, telling yourself that what's happening is not as terrible as you have assumed, that it may have a silver lining, or actually be part of your growth. Whatever works is the right way to achieve the shift.
Keep in mind that it is hard work but a great victory over the self as this effort succeeds, and as you learn to become the master of your thoughts and therefore of your emotions. It is not necessary to expect to be in a new place of bliss or joy. There is nothing wrong with indifference, neutrality, calmness and detachment. These are much healthier emotions, if that's what they can be called, or states of mind, and give you the space to observe yourself making fresh choices in your thoughts, catching yourself if you fall into old patterns, and do the very important inner work of continuously moving from a negative place into a calm place, which is an underpinning of psychological development and spiritual attainment.
There is a lightness to be gained from this. People have said that their hearts opened instantaneously upon switching thoughts. Some feel a heavy burden is lifted, perhaps vaporized. The reason that emotional mastery performs in this manner, bringing consistent results, is that it is the path to spiritual evolution. If all the world could do this, could move easily out of anger, hatred, fear, disgust, and so forth, we might actually be able to attain the longed-for goal of world peace. It won't come from treaties, or government decrees, or laying down of arms, or détente. It will come from individuals who learn to stop laboring in their dark emotions, and choose to come into the light.

MOVIE REVIEW: "Doctor Strange", by Marvel Studios (2016)
Not being an aficionado of Marvel comics, my knowledge of this superhero and storyline was slim. However, a metaphysical friend had recommended that I see it and give her feedback as to my impression.
The movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead character and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in a plot that revolves around a neurosurgeon named Dr. Steven Strange, who "after a tragic car accident must put ego aside and learn the secrets of the hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions" (quote from a reviewing website). The blurb goes on to clarify (thankfully so, since the movie is so impenetrable and confusing) that "Dr. Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe."
When I say "impenetrable and confusing", I'm referring to a great number of excellent CG effects such as twisting, imploding, Escher-like transformations of streets and buildings as well as a magical weaponized cape, shattered mirror-like dimensional portals, and other cool devices to portray alternate realities and astral projections, all of which nevertheless muddy the convoluted plot and chopped-up presentation. Our hero, after some intensive Eastern martial arts training, is amazingly quickly lifted to new powers whereby he can tackle an arch-enemy who is, of course, ready to destroy the world. His arch-enemy, Kaecilius, seeks ultimate power (yawn, have we seen this plot before?), and seems to be unstoppable until Strange bests him.
My problem with this movie is similar to many previous cinematic experiences. It seems our writers are so enchanted by the possibilities of really cool immersive special effects that they have forgotten to pay attention to character-driven storylines. Despite some very good metaphysical points in our story, such as astral projection, bi-location, the ability to move through dimensions of time and space, the concentration of enormous power in one's hands or fingertips, and even a sanctuary for the Elders who sustain the knowledge and training of the Perennial Philosophy, what we have here is a cliché account of a superhero who uses special powers gained through, it would seem, Kung Fu and mystically devised weapons, to kill an enemy. We never become terribly involved with the arrogant, egotistical Strange's journey - although he does break down and become a little more human towards the end of the movie in considering to use his superpowers to heal and be a little loving (not a very developed storyline), and I for one am left bored and yearning to see an advanced soul tap into higher powers, change his world, his relationships, and his evolving journey in the direction of an open heart, a transcendent interplay with other humans, and in general a picture of an aspirational goal that humans can look towards instead of just more killing!
I give this movie credit for its portrayal of metaphysical stuff like the out-of-body or near-death experience, and certainly in the art department for some very cool head-tripping morphing of scenery. But IMHO the movie falls flat and does not leave me with any desire to see its sequel, a flaw that has become all too prevalent in recent blockbusters.

MOVING FORWARD DURING CHAOS
We have spoken before of the need to participate in the unfolding drama of the world. Since each person's actions (and even thoughts) are the creative tools, as well as the fundamental ground, that shapes and progresses the world, it is insufficient - we would say, wrong - to remain passive or ineffective.
In today's world, there are clashing beliefs and partisan passions. Few remain totally neutral or unmoved (yet there are always some humans whose lives remain unaffected and who can simply go on day to day in their self-contained bubbles). Most people in this era, however, feel very affected by world events, very moved, perhaps emotionally excited or depressed, and this is the ferment upon which the world is being shaped. Hashed out. Created.
Today's world is not moving forward in a linear or smooth way, but very choppy. Two steps forward, one step back, etc. Never think that creativity can't progress during chaos. Chaos, in fact, with its clash of wills and turbulent antagonism, is a very fertile time for creativity. But we say, participate!
How? Talk, act, design, imagine, and bring to fruition some of your passions, even explore your uncertainties. When you do such steps, you will feel as though you have moved forward (as indeed you will have). Stagnation is the "enemy" here. Dynamic movement is the friend. Visualize the future as moving continuously forward, even if it zigs and zags.
That is your "homework", so to speak. It is an exciting, fertile, although confusing time. See what it brings to you once you have activated your Self.
