Dear Friends:

One of the beauties of these snowy, cold days is the stark landscape. The leafless trees stand out against the white snow and the Genesee River is clearly visible as it rushes down the gorge and under the city bridges. It is a reminder to me that my life can be cluttered with unnecessary things that take away from my ability to be present to the world. Those things can be possessions that demand my attention, or they can be negative thoughts that take up space in my mind. I learn from Eknath Easwaran as he writes: To live simply is to live gently, keeping in mind always the needs of the planet, other creatures, and the generations to come. In doing this we lose nothing, because the interests of the whole naturally include our own... In claiming nothing for [ourselves, we] have everything, for everything is [ours] to enjoy as part of the whole.

Next week, we begin the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday services on February 14. It is a different way to spend Valentine's Day, but also a tender one when we connect it with the three disciplines of Lent. Loving someone deeply requires a humility on our part to set aside our own wants and become aware of the needs of another (fasting). Praying for another connects our hearts (prayer). And when we love, we share what belongs to us with others (almsgiving). I hope you will come and join me for one of these beautiful services.  Our Ash Wednesday services will be at Noon at Spiritus Christi and at 7 pm at Immanuel (815 Park Ave.). Ashes will be distributed at the Masses.

Our love goes out to Maureen Marlow whose father, Warren West, died peacefully last Sunday in his sleep. He was 90 years old. We also remember George Banks who died on January 27. George was a great contributor to the gospel, jazz & blues scene in Rochester, and directed several church choirs including ours at Corpus Christi.

Looking for a time apart to sit in the stillness of your Lenten journey? Please join Jim Bridges and Kathy Welch in Taylor Chapel for five Monday morning Lenten meditations beginning February 26. From 7-7:40 am each Monday we will share a reflection, some music, prayer and silence to deepen our practice of embracing God as God is always embracing us. We would love to see you there in the candlelight!

Come and join us on Thursday nights during Lent for a soup supper followed by an inspiring Mass with beautiful music. It will be a time to both connect and reflect. Our speakers this year will share their own personal talents with us and then reflect on how they have used them to bring a powerful message to the world. Soup suppers will begin on Thursday, February 22 at 6 pm.

This comes with love,

Rev. Mary

2017 TITHING SUMMARY:
Thank you for your continued generosity that allows Spiritus Christi to contribute to God's work beyond our own church community. Our church tithes 15% of each week's collection to grass-roots organizations, which our own parishioners nominate. These organizations serve the poor, marginalized, disenfranchised, abandoned and abused in our community and beyond.

In July 2017 and again in January 2018 checks totaling over $134,000 were sent to 62 diverse organizations including our 2 former Corpus Christi Outreaches (Dimitri House and Isaiah House). Many of these organizations are right here in Rochester while others are from across the country and abroad including Haiti and Mexico. Your contributions help to provide food, clothing, shelter, medical and legal aid, education, counseling and advocacy to individuals within these organizations.

Once again, we invite Spiritus Christi parishioners to nominate organizations to receive our Tithing. Please utilize the form below or on the website to nominate a deserving organization. Please return your nominations to the church office by April 10.
