This week's Gospel: The Ascension

Dear Friends,

When I was eight years old, I went to my first Major League Baseball game. I might have been the biggest baseball fan in the world at that time, or at least it felt that way. On the way to Yankee Stadium, I imagined it would look the same as our old Silver Stadium at 500 Norton Street. To my surprise, it was bigger than I had imagined. I can remember walking through the walkway like it was yesterday and, if I close my eyes, I can feel what it felt like to see the field that my heroes played on for the very first time. My heart was beating, my jaw was hanging, and my eyes were opened wide. Every step we took that brought us closer to our seats made my smile crack bigger and bigger.

I know the look that was on my face so well. I know it, because I see it year after year in the second week of May. This time it's not Yankee Stadium causing wide-eyed eight-year-olds, it's the look on the faces of children who are about to receive their First Communion. It's one of my favorite days of the year. Not only do I get the privilege to work with the children of our community for this beautiful sacrament, I also get to witness that look on their faces when they are about to receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time. Do you remember the first time you received Jesus through the sacrament of First Communion? For so many years I have made the walk to receive the Eucharist, and it is because of the children I work with that I too remain excited, with my heart beating faster! Twenty-eight of our children are receiving First Communion and are excited to be called by name to the table that Jesus invites us to week after week. Congratulations to Feven Vigianni-Cole, Mikayla Spoth, Maryclaire Wirth, Sarah Shiner, Carter Lustica, Sofia Tareke, Ava Corson, Natalie Marino, Drew Scorsone, Mackenzie Scarlato, Kailey Forbes, Sophia Lustica, Brynn O'Connel, Olivia Koegel, Ryan Crosby, Shanley Pluff, Sam Riccione, Emma Robinson, Aniela Foos, Nina Depasquale, Mikayla Buckshaw, Lukas Maley, Katherine Pluff, Cody Preston, Addison Robinson, Sophie Dertinger, Ava Dipasquale and Sebastian Colangelo-Story.

This will be an interactive cooking demonstration using a combination of science, medicine, great flavor and a desire for life-long healthy changes in selection and preparation of food to promote optimal health and improve chronic disease! Limited to 20-25 participants per session. Call the Spiritus office (325-1180) to sign up for the cooking demo and also for recipes you will receive. To check out her culinary website,  CLICK HERE.

A National Call for Moral Revival is a local and national movement, which builds upon and expands the unfulfilled vision outlined by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. before his assassination in 1968. The 2018 campaign is focusing on King's fight against the "three evils" of systemic racism, poverty and the war economy, and is adding a fourth area of concern -- ecological devastation. The campaign officially runs  May 13 through June 21 with 40 days of action -- taking the form of local actions/protests, workshops, webinars, weekly rallies in Albany and nonviolent civil disobedience. For more information on LOCAL actions, please  CLICK HERE. For more information on the national campaign, including the broader vision and demands of the campaign,  CLICK HERE. If you have any questions, please contact Mike Boucher at 325-5260.
