San Francisco Giants Update
|
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (2-0), seen here last June at AT&T Park, guided the Giants (2-5) to a 5-3 victory on Sunday, April 9 over the host
San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Cueto threw seven innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Newly-acquired Giants closer Mark Melancon, formerly of the
Pittsburgh Pirates, earned his first save on the season.

San Francisco Giants Update:
So far in the regular season, the Giants have picked up right where they left off in the 2016 playoffs. Before Sunday's game against the Padres, the Giants held a 1-5 record and had lost four consecutive games. While this isn't the ideal way to start a season, the fashion in which they lost these games brought back unwanted memories from last year's playoff series against the Cubs. Out of the five losses, the Giants held a lead in four, and had multiple leads in three. Furthermore, the bullpen is accountable for a pair of the losses, an issue that was meant to be addressed in the offseason. Nevertheless, the team has remained optimistic about the long season ahead of them. San Francisco returns to AT&T Park on Monday for their home opener, facing the Arizona Diamondbacks at 1:35 p.m., with Matt Moore expected to take on Taijuan Walker.

Oakland Athletics Update:
Opening Night proved to be a special one at the Oakland Coliseum this year, with the Athletics dedicating their field to Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson in front of a sellout crowd. Before the A's took on the Angels to start their season, the organization honored Henderson's contributions to both the team and the Oakland community, dubbing the field within the Coliseum as Rickey Henderson Field. The A's legend responded graciously, telling fans, "My heart and soul is forever in Oakland," after accepting the honor. The excitement continued for A's fans following the pregame ceremonies, with the Athletics defeating the Angels 4-2 behind a pair of Khris Davis homers and a solid start by Kendall Graveman. After a week of regular season play, the A's find themselves in 3rd place in the AL West with a 3-4 record.

Oakland Raiders Update
Former
Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch has met with coach Jack Del Rio, telling the
Oakland Raiders that he intends to "un-retire." On the heels of the departure of Latavius Murray to free agency, Lynch would be a welcome compliment to the backfield of DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard. Seattle still holds the running back's contact and would have to release Lynch or work out a trade.

Did T.S. Eliot overlook the month of April for its sports possibilities?
|
Clearly T.S. Eliot, who is viewed as a world class, multi-talented literary All-Star, wasn't much of a sports fan, as we read in his poem, The Waste Land.
April is the Cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers....
April is the
Coolest month in my view, for sports fans here, there and everywhere. Why?
Baseball is back.
NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Champions are crowned.
The Masters champ dons a green jacket.
NBA Playoffs tip off -- Durant will be back and the Dubs have won 14 in a row.
NHL Playoffs drop the puck -- can we get a Stanley Cup?
NFL Draft -- pick us some winners!
Boston
Marathon
London
Marathon
Wrestlemania 33
NCAA Men's Hockey Frozen Four
NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship
The 170th Grand National Horse Race in England
World Men's Curling Championship.
World Figure Skating Championships
World Snooker Championship
World Rallycross Championship
World Synchronized Skating championship
Chinese Grand Prix
Let's not forget that April saw the Delicious Debut of multiple food trucks at the Oakland Coliseum, featuring such grub as sushi, sliders, garlic fries, pulled pork, chicken strips, popcorn shrimp, steak hoagies, wings, burgers, kahlua pig, curry (not Steph), tacos locos, rice bowls, frozen custard, poutine and a bonanza of BBQed everything.
There may be more artery clogging going on here than getting on 880 after the Warriors/A's playing home games at the same time. Even the talent of T. S. Eliot would have a tough time putting all this in his mouth or a poem.
Andy Dolich has worked as an executive in all four major sports leagues, including the Oakland A's, Golden State Warriors and San Francisco 49ers. He is the managing director and head of U.S. Sports Practice for Odgers Berndstson, the UK's leading executive search firm, and director of Career Development for the University of San Francisco's online master's program in the Business of Collegiate Athletics.

Did You Know?
-- San Francisco Giants Trivia --
|
The San Francisco Giants joined the National League in 1883 as the New York Gothams and won their first-ever game against the Boston Beaneaters at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan. The team's name changed to the Giants two years later in 1885. Legend has it player-manager Jim Mutrie congratulated his teammates after a particularly convincing victory by calling them, "My big fellows, my giants." The name stuck.
