San Francisco Giants Update
|
After a challenging road trip to the Midwest, the San Francisco Giants welcomed their return home to AT&T Park. Giants fans are ever faithful, evidenced by their record of 511 consecutive sold-out home games. Photo by Ed Jay. |
San Francisco Giants Update:
In a rematch of last season's NLDS series, the Giants traveled to Wrigley Field to take on the Cubs in a four-game series. The Cubs took three out of four against the Giants, the same series score as last year's playoffs. The Giants finished the road trip with a 3-4 record before returning home to take two out of three against the Braves. Strong pitching performances from Ty Blach and Johnny Cueto fueled the victories, but still left San Francisco with a 22-30 record as we approach June. Help is on the way for San Francisco, though, with Hunter Pence and Madison Bumgarner both progressing in their rehab. Pence is expected to begin his assignment to the Minor Leagues on either Wednesday or Thursday, while Bumgarner will begin throwing again on Friday. In more injury news, outfielder Jarrett Parker hopes to rejoin the team in a few weeks after breaking his clavicle on April 15, but third baseman Conor Gillaspie's return will be delayed after experiencing a setback with his back spasms. The Giants will take any help they can get, especially in the hitting department, as they entered Sunday's game averaging the fewest runs per game in the National League.

In the bottom of the first inning against the visiting
Boston Red Sox on Thursday, May 18,
Oakland's center fielder Rajai Davis belted a long drive, thought he had a triple and was called safe at third.

But no,
Red Sox third baseman Deven Marrero thought otherwise and appealed. The call was reviewed and overturned and Davis was called out.

Oakland Athletics Update:
It was a relatively slow week for the A's on the field, with a pair of off days on Monday and Thursday. The A's split a pair of games at home against the Marlins, getting the win behind Sonny Gray's eleven strikeout outing, before hitting the road to face the Yankees in New York. Oakland's road struggles continued, dropping two in a row after winning the series opener. During Sunday's rubber match, the A's held an early lead, but broke down defensively, allowing five unearned runs. The storyline of the week was the pitching rotation, which is experiencing some turnover after being riddled with injuries. On Saturday, Jesse Hahn was placed on the disabled list due to a triceps strain that forced him to leave his last start. Kendall Graveman was also put on the DL after experiencing recurring shoulder soreness. Graveman missed 12 days of the season back in April with the same type of issue, but the A's are expecting a longer recovery period this time around. In their place, the Athletics are calling up Jharel Cotton and Daniel Mengden to fill the roles. Mengden will start his first game of the season for the A's on Monday against the Indians.
