SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE:  REDISTRICTING PLAN SELECTED FOR RECOMMENDATION
Over one hundred parents, guardians, and community members attended a public meeting on November 5th and learned more about the work of the Enrollment Management Committee.  At this meeting, the five plans for redistricting for the 2013-2014 school year were reviewed.  We certainly appreciate the feedback, questions and comments we've also received from others via email.  Please visit the Enrollment Management page on our website to view the presentation from the public meeting.

At the November 26th Enrollment Management Committee meeting, the 70 member committee narrowed the five plans down to one for recommendation to the School Board.  The Committee also discussed middle school feeder patterns.  Throughout this process, plans for redistricting were consistently assessed using the following criteria:
1. Impact the fewest number of students while achieving more balanced enrollment in the schools.
2. Better equalize socioeconomic status in each school.
3. Maintain a representation of the racial diversity of our community in each school.
4. Maintain class sizes within the following parameters:
K - 2nd Grade: 18-22 students
3rd - 5th Grade: 22-26 students
6th - 8th Grade: 26-28 students
5. When all else fails go back to parameter #1

The presentation from that meeting is also available on the Enrollment Management pageCLICK HERE to view the plan selected for recommendation to the School Board.

If this topic is of interest to you, the next community meeting for redistricting is scheduled for January 21, 2014 at 6:30pm at White Lick Elementary.  As always, If you have questions regarding the work of this committee e-mail me at jsnapp@brownsburg.k12.in.us.

Sincerely,

Jim Snapp
Superintendent

De-Stressing Your Holiday Season

The "to do" list this time of year can be daunting: from shopping for gifts, to cooking for guests, to year-end obligations at work, it can feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day.

To reduce your stress about overindulging at holiday meals, make simple recipe substitutions to cut calories, fat and salt. While portion control is still important, consider the following swaps:

*    When the recipe calls for a whole egg, try 2 egg whites
*    When the recipe calls for sour cream, try low fat plain yogurt or low fat sour cream
*    When the recipe calls for whole milk, try skim or 1% milk
*    When the recipe calls for ice cream, try frozen yogurt
*    When the recipe calls for heavy cream (not for whipping), try a 1:1 ratio of flour whisked into non-fat milk (eg. 1 cup of flour + 1 cup of non-fat milk)
*    When the recipe calls for whipped cream, try chilled evaporated skim milk or other low fat whipped products
*    When the recipe calls for cheese, try low-fat cheese but note that fat-free cheese does not melt well when cooking or baking
*    When the recipe calls for butter, try light butter
*    When the recipe calls for cream of mushroom, try low-fat or fat-free cream of mushroom

Attention Parents:
If you would like to visit your child's teacher, arrangements should be made with the teacher in advance.  BCSC staff is unable to accommodate pop-in visits to classrooms that may interrupt instruction.  We love to see our parents at special events that are scheduled before school, but we want to remind you that unscheduled visits can disrupt class time for many other students.  We appreciate your cooperation.
