FAFSA DAY COMING TO BHS FEBRUARY 20
Attention parents and guardians with seniors, please mark your calendar for Thursday, February 20th.  BHS will be holding their 4th annual FAFSA Day from 10am - 7pm in the Media Center Computer Lab A. Volunteers will assist families in completing the online FAFSA.  Students will receive an orange folder on Tuesday, Feb. 4th in their English classes.  This folder contains important student and parent financial aid documents that need to be brought to the FAFSA Day.  To be fully considered for all state and federal financial aid, the FAFSA filing deadline is March 10, 2014.  Some colleges and universities have their own FAFSA filing deadline dates as early as March 1st.  Please check the financial aid websites of the school your student wishes to attend to ensure their FAFSA deadline is met.  You should also check for any additional forms that may be required by that college or university. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Martin, College and Career Adviser in the Senior Academy.

Here are some additional events being held to assist families through the financial aid process:

FAFSA Friday - Learn More Indiana will host a FAFSA Friday webinar on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.  This is a free online event that will help students and families with general FAFSA questions, to prepare them for filing the FAFSA, and to connect participants with financial aid experts through public chat or private messaging.  To participate in the event, log on to http://www.FAFSAFriday.org at the appropriate time.

College Goal Sunday - College Goal Sunday is a program similar to our FAFSA Day that helps college-bound Indiana students, who qualify for undergraduate admission to a college or technical school in 2014, and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  College Goal Sunday provides on-site help from financial aid experts, primarily from Indiana colleges and universities.  This will be held at 40 different sites across the state of Indiana.  Ivy Tech Community College in Avon will be the closest location to Brownsburg.  The program begins at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 23, 2014.  Please visit http://www.collegegoalsunday.org for more information.

FIT & HEALTHY WITH IU WEST HOSPITAL
The BCSC partnership with Indiana University Health goes far beyond athletic training and building sponsorships.  IU Health and Methodist Sports Medicine will be sharing helpful information in our Spotlight Newsletter each month.

Let "Stayin' Alive" Help You Save a Life
February is American Heart Month, a great opportunity to think about preventing heart disease, and preparing yourself to act in a crisis. 88% of cardiac arrests occur at home. The American Heart Association recommends calling 911 and using hands-only CPR as the most effective way to keep your loved one's blood pumping until help arrives.

Hard and fast compressions in the center of the chest to the beat of the Bee Gee's disco classic "Stayin' Alive" are all you need to know to perform hands only CPR.

IU Health West will be at the Brownsburg High School basketball game on February 7 to teach this life saving skill.  To learn more, visit www.iuhealth.org/west/heart or go to the American Heart Association's website to view a helpful video: CLICK HERE

Gearing Up for Indoor Sports, Part Two

Don't be sidelined by injuries
As organized sports move indoors during the cold weather months, one of the biggest fears for parents is watching their kids get injured while competing. According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, an estimated 21.5 million American kids between the ages of 6-17 participated in team sports in 2011.

Sprains and strains and acute injuries are commonly seen in athletes participating in indoor sports. A preseason physical, wearing properly fitting equipment, and recognizing pain early can prevent some of these injuries.

In January we outlined some common injuries faced by athletes that participate in Basketball, Gymnastics and Hockey according to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Stop Sports Injuries Campaign. This month we take a look at Swimming, Wrestling and Figure Skating.  CLICK HERE
Brownsburg Community School Corporation will provide, within a secure environment, an engaging, relevant educational program with academic opportunities for all students to pursue their maximum intellectual potential.  Social and physical opportunities will also be provided to students to encourage them to become well-rounded individuals.  Reaching maximum achievement will prepare students to live productively and responsibly in a technical, global society.
